Reflection for today…Respect Yourself -Don Miguel Ruiz & Björk

5 Jan

“Everyone has a price, and life respects that price.

But that price is not measured in dollars or in gold;

It is measured in love.

More, than that, it is measured in self-love.

How much you love yourself–that is your price–

and life respects the price.

When you love yourself, your price is very high,

which means your tolerance for self-abuse is very low.

It’s very low because you respect yourself.”

Don Miguel Ruiz, Wisdom From The Mastery of Love

I Am Nobody's Bitch 001

When I was a child my mother taught me to respect people. What she didn’t tell me is that you need to have boundaries so that people will respect you. Not only do you have to have boundaries but you have to strictly enforce them as well.

I used to be so afraid of confrontations and of speaking up. I would always worry that I might upset, hurt or offend someone. To an extent, I was also afraid of being disliked and rejected. Since I did not like myself, I was so hungry for other people’s approval {even though I did not consciously know it at the time}.

The price of this silence was putting up with some disrespect. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t regret it because I deeply regret it. I also have to acknowledge that without these experiences, then I would not have come to these realizations.

They are lessons that I am still learning and life only keeps offering you more tests.

Being “nice” is an invitation for people to test your boundaries. These days, I would much rather have respect than just be a “nice” person. It seems like a universal law that unless you respect yourself then no one truly will.

Another thing that I learned is that some people do not deserve your respect or your presence in their lives. Please let me clarify what I mean. Everyone deserves basic respect as human beings. The respect that I am speaking about is the respect that people earn through their friendship, loyalty and compassion. Some people just do not deserve that level of respect from you. Some people do not deserve your friendship, loyalty and compassion.

Trust and respect need to be earned for them to hold any gravitas/weight.

Lyrics

Army of Me

Björk

[Verse 1]
“Stand up
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Verse 2]
You’re alright
There’s nothing wrong
Self-sufficience, please!
And get to work

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me

[Verse 3]
You’re on your own now
We won’t save you
Your rescue squad
Is too exhausted

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me.”

Reflection for today…A False Friend Is A Hidden Enemy -Buddha

31 Dec

“A good friend who points out mistakes and imperfections and rebukes evil is to be respected.

An insincere and evil friend is to be more feared than a wild beast;

a wild beast may wound your body,

but an evil friend will wound your mind.”

-Buddha

It is so tragic to realize that your heart was in the right place with the wrong person. How could you be so wrong? How could you see a soulmate in someone that wasn’t even a friend? They were wearing a mask all along. How sobering and terrifying it is to realize that Judas the traitor was by your side all of this time?

*

Loyalty is of the utmost importance to me and it coexists alongside respect. I gave my loyal unto death necklace to someone that didn’t deserve it. Curiously, it got stolen from that person. They were not meant to have it because they were not worthy of my loyalty or friendship. I am the one that is loyal unto death. I have to learn to be more discerning with my loyalty and friendship because it is so dangerous and painful to be loyal to the wrong people.

Loyal Unto Death Inox Dog Tag Necklace

I found this image on Pinterest. I am hoping to buy another necklace for myself but I haven’t found one. I love the sword piercing through the heart. The message of loyalty represents who I am at my core.

YOU GOT ME LYRICS

[Chorus: Erykah Badu]
“If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me[Verse 1: Black Thought]
Somebody
Told me that this planet was small, we used to live in
The same building, on the same floor, and never met before

Until I’m overseas on tour, and peeped this Ethiopian
Queen from Philly taking classes abroad
She studying film and photo, flash, focus, record
Said she working on a flick and could my clique do the score
She said she loved my show in Paris at Elysee Montmartre
And that I stepped off the stage and took a piece of her heart
We knew from the start that things fall apart and tend to shatter
She like, “That shit don’t matter.” When I get home, get at her
Through letter, phone, whatever; let’s link, let’s get together
Shit, you think not, think the Thought went home and forgot?
Time passed, we back in Philly, now she up in my spot
Telling me the things I’m telling her is making her hot
Starting building with her constantly round-the-clock
Now she in my world like hip-hop, and keep telling me…

[Chorus: Erykah Badu]
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me

[Verse 2: Black Thought + Eve]
Yo, I’m the type that’s always catching a flight
And sometimes I gotta be out at the height of the night
And that’s when she flip and get on some old…
another lonely night

Seem like I’m on the side, you only loving your mic
I know you gotta get that paper, daddy, keep that shit tight
But, yo, I need some sort of love in my life, you dig me?
While politicking with my sister from New York City
She said she know this ball player and he think I’m pretty—psych
I’m playin’, boo, you know it’s just with you I’m staying, boo
And when cats be poppin’ game, I don’t hear what they sayin’, boo
When you out there in the world, I’m still your girl
With all my classes I don’t have the time for life’s thrills
So when you sweating on stage, think of me when you rhyme
And don’t be listening to your homies, they be leadin’ you blind
Yeah, so what you saying, I can trust you? Is you crazy?! You my king for real
But sometimes relationships get ill, no doubt

[Chorus: Erykah Badu]
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me

[Verse 3: Black Thought]
That snake could be that chick and that rat could be that cool cat
That’s whispering, “She trying to play you for the fool, Black.”

If something’s on your chest, then let it be known
See, I’m not your every five minutes all on the phone
And on the topic of trust, it’s just a matter of fact
That people bite back and fracture what’s intact
And they’ll forever be, I ain’t on some “Oh, I’m a celebrity!”
I deal with the real, so if it’s artificial, let it be

I’ve seen people caught in love like whirlwinds
Listening to their squads and listening to girlfriends
That’s exactly the point where their whole world ends
Lies come in, that’s where that drama begins, and she like…

[Chorus: Erykah Badu]
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or
What club I went to with my homies
Baby, don’t worry, you know that you got me
If you were worried ’bout where
I been or who I saw or…”

Reflection for today…The Manifesto of Encouragement -Danielle LaPorte

20 Oct

The Manifesto of Encouragement

“Right now:

There are Tibetan Buddhist monks in a temple in the Himalayas endlessly reciting mantras for the cessation of your suffering and for the flourishing of your happiness.

Someone you haven’t met yet is already dreaming of adoring you.

Someone is writing a book that you will read in the next two years that will change how you look at life.

Nuns in the Alps are in endless vigil, praying for the Holy Spirit to alight the hearts of all of God’s children.

A farmer is looking at his organic crops and whispering, “nourish them.”

Someone wants to kiss you, to hold you, to make tea for you.

Someone is willing to lend you money, wants to know what your favourite food is, and treat you to a movie.

Someone in your orbit has something immensely valuable to give you — for free.

Something is being invented this year that will change how your generation lives, communicates, heals and passes on.

The next great song is being rehearsed.

Thousands of people are in yoga classes right now intentionally sending light out from their heart chakras and wrapping it around the earth.

Millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.

Someone is in profound pain, and a few months from now, they’ll be thriving like never before. They just can’t see it from where they’re at.

Someone who is craving to be partnered, to be acknowledged, to ARRIVE, will get precisely what they want — and even more. And because that gift will be so fantastical in it’s reach and sweetness, it will quite magically alter their memory of angsty longing and render it all “So worth the wait.

Someone has recently cracked open their joyous, genuine nature because they did the hard work of hauling years of oppression off of their psyche — this luminous juju is floating in the ether, and is accessible to you.

Someone just this second wished for world peace, in earnest.

Someone is fighting the fight so that you don’t have to.

Some civil servant is making sure that you get your mail, and your garbage is picked up, that the trains are running on time, and that you are generally safe. Someone is dedicating their days to protecting your civil liberties and clean drinking water.

Someone is regaining their sanity. Someone is coming back from the dead. Someone is genuinely forgiving the seemingly unforgivable. Someone is curing the incurable.

You. Me. Some. One. Now.”

Reflection for today…To Be A Philosopher -Henry David Thoreau

27 Sep

“To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts,

not even to found a school,

but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates,

a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust.

It is to solve some of the problems of life,

not only theoretically, but practically.”

Henry David ThoreauWalden (1854), p. 12

"The heart is a symbol of love, of emotion, the center of our Selves. Wings represent freedom, divinity, and transcendence..."

Heart of Wisdom Symbolic Mandala by: Cristina McAllister at Gypsy Mystery Arts.
Please go to:
http://cristinamcallister.blogspot.ca/2011/01/art-spotlight-heart-of-wisdom.html for more information. She goes into an even deeper analysis and explanation on her blog. It is trully fascinating.

According to the artist Cristina McAllister:
“The heart is a symbol of love, of emotion, the center of our Selves. Wings represent freedom, divinity, and transcendence.
Together they suggest the form of an owl – an animal sacred to Athena, ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, civilization, strength and strategy. Owls have been revered throughout the world as messengers of sacred knowledge, insight and intuitive awareness, as well as scholarly pursuits.
At the top, a Native American shaman’s eye offers wisdom and protection. In many tribal cultures, shamans serve as intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. They interpret omens and offer insight through mystical, as well as practical means, in effort to protect and guide their people.
Below twines a pair of snakes. These creatures signified wisdom to the ancient Egyptians, Jews, Gnostics, Eastern Indians and Chinese. The notion of snakes being wise was based on observations of their behavior. When hunting, snakes appear to think deeply and consider every move before acting.
Also present are two West African adrinka symbols. Sankofa, or “return and get it” (above the winged heart) represents the ability to learn from the past. Nyansapo, or “Knot of Wisdom” (at bottom center) indicates intelligence, wisdom and cleverness.”

Reflection for today…Love and Respect -Don Miguel Ruiz

18 Jul

If someone is not treating you with love and respect,

it is a gift if they walk away from you.

If that person doesn’t walk away, you will surely endure many years of suffering with him or her.

Walking away may hurt for a while, but your heart will eventually heal.

Then you can choose what you really want.

You will find that you don’t need to trust others as much as you need to trust yourself to make the right choices.
