Psychoanalysis As Archaeology in Penny Dreadful

14 May

Dedicated to O…

Freud famously described psychoanalysis as archaeology, the unearthing of meaning layered deep beneath an “expanse of ruins.

In television and movies it’s closer to a detective story.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/28/arts/television/28stan.html

Penny Dreadful Dr Seward & Vanessa Ives

In their first meeting, Vanessa Ives {Eva Green} and Dr.Seward {Patti LuPone} explore the intimate relationship between {potential} patient and psychologist.

*

This brilliant scene from Penny Dreadful illustrates how a alienist/psychologist/therapist/psychiatrist excavates the truth through words, gestures/body language, actions, etc. Although it is the first time that Vanessa Ives and Dr.Seward meet, the alienist sets her boundaries. Since it is a preliminary consultation, she has to assess if Vanessa will be her patient {“if I take your case”}.

Vanessa’s gestures are psychoanalyzed {why are you scratching your hand? Why were you doing that?}. Vanessa replies shyly that she had an itch. Dr.Seward says “no, you didn’t” with conviction. To Dr.Seward, the scratching of the hand is not as it appears; it connotes nervousness/anxiety. Every gesture speaks volumes to the alienist/psychologist/psychiatrist

Vanessa sees Dr.Seward’s observations as a challenge. She says, “this is a challenge. You’ll see if I am worthy of study.” Her astute observations about Dr.Seward’s criteria are accurate. Through prelimiary psychoanalysis, the therapist is trying to assess if Vanessa is worthy of her time, energy and talents. Is she worth having as a patient?

Dr.Seward warns Vanessa, “I am not your friend or your priest or your husband. I am your doctor. You come to me to get better because you are ill- no other reason. Do you understand that?” She sets her professional boundaries clearly. The purpose of therapy is to heal Vanessa of her illness.

Dr.Seward’s compassion shines through despite her tough demeanor. She asks Vanessa, do you understand that you are ill- not bad, not unworthy- just ill? Depression often tricks a person into thinking that they are unworthy. It tells many lies. The therapist must convince the patient of their depressed state instead of internalizing a depressed identity.

She resassures Vanessa that there are “no emotions unwelcome in this room.” Vanessa is encouraged to release her emotions because it is cathartic to do so. Dr.Seward is also communicating to Vanessa that she will not be judged. She is free to speak and express herself as necessary. She also warns her, “if this process doesn’t appeal to you, the door is there.” It almost sounds like she is testing Vanessa or interrogating her at times.

The turning point is when Vanessa takes control of the narrative. She says with a smile, “you don’t want me to leave…because I scratch my hand. You find that telling…those phobias that interest you.” She assures the doctor that she might interest her as a patient. Vanessa notes that Dr.Seward doesn’t need the ten shillings but she does need interesting people to collect. Dr.Seward disagree with her by saying that she takes patients on to cure them. Vanessa asks, what the difference is between collecting and curing?

*

This scene is when Dr.Seward really showcases her talents as the skilled alienist. She ends her analsysis with the metaphor of the ouroboros. {The snake eating its tail is a symbol of infinity}. In essence, Dr.Seward is telling Vanessa that she is trapped in an endless cycle of unhappiness as she constantly tortures herself.

12 Monkeys End At The Beginning

The ouroboros from the 12 Monkeys television series from Syfy

Dr. Seward (to Vanessa Ives):

“I already know what’s wrong with you.

You’re unhappy. You’re isolated.

You think you’re the cause of this unhappiness and are unworthy of affection so you’ve few friends.

Recently you lost something you think very important- your lover, your faith, your family, or all three.

You blame yourself for this, so it makes you neurotic and you don’t sleep and don’t eat anything healthy anyway.

You used to take care of your appearance, but you’ve lost interest in that, so you avoid mirrors.

Sunlight bothers you, so you avoid that too, about which you’re guilty because you think it’s unhealthy and even immoral not to like the sun.

You’re not a woman of convention or you wouldn’t be here, but you like to pretend you are so people don’t notice you.

But you sometimes like that as well, and can dress to draw the eye. But then you think the men who look at you are fools, or worse, to be taken in by such an obvious outward show.

So, instead you’re drawn to dark, complicated, impossible men, assuring your own unhappiness and isolation because, after all, you’re happiest alone.

But not even then because you can’t stop thinking about what you’ve lost, again, for which you blame yourself.

So the cycle goes on, the snake eating its own tail.”

*

I highly recommend watching Penny Dreadful.

*

These scenes convey the brilliant acting of Eva Green, Patti LuPone and the work of the creative teams behind Penny Dreadful. It also highlights the emancipating insight that one can gain from psychotherapy. I have been in psychotherapy and it is one of the best decisions I have made. The internal work is so challenging and often painful but it is worth it in terms of healing, personal development, self-discovery, growth, etc. I highly recommend it.

The key is being ready to open yourself up to examine your memory palace/the locked rooms in your mind and finding the right alienist/psychologist/therapist for you.

*

P.s. I plan to do posts about the television shows Penny Dreadful; 12 Monkeys; the alienist; etc.

Reflection for today…Freedom From Toxicity -George Michael

7 May

George Michael {Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou} had the voice and heart of an angel.

{He often donated anonymously to numerous charities and humanitarian organizations}.

He remains one of my favourite singers/artists.

George Michael With Guitar

His song freedom was a push back against his record label Sony {at the time}.

Freedom Video CollageGeorge Michael Freedom I Don't Belong To You & You Don't Belong To Me

The song freedom can also represent freedom from toxicity, lies, manipulation, deceit, betrayal, selfishness, toxic situations, patterns of behaviour, thoughts, emotions, toxic strangers/family/friends/acquaintances/romantic entanglements.

How do you determine if a person or situation is toxic?

The toxicity lies in how damaging the person or situation is to yourself and your life.

Often their toxicity is like a contagion that infects your life as well.

The question you must ask yourself is:

does a person/situation contribute to your life?

Do they fuel your personal development/spiritual growth or do they inhibit it?

A toxic situation or person robs you of your time energy/vitality, peace, self-esteem, sanity, strength, love, etc.

Time and distance enlighten you about the toxicity of the situation or person.

You can see the toxic web that you were entangled in.

The truth emancipates you.

Now I am free from that highly toxic person and the toxic energy he secretly brought into my life.

I wasn’t conscious of the toxic situation that he forced me into until much later. His toxic energy and behaviour were poisoning me.

At the time, I didn’t know.

I was asleep.

My intuition kept telling me something was wrong so I finally listened and it led me to the truth.

{I am so grateful that I listened to my inner wisdom}.

When the truth came to light, everything changed and I empowered myself.

As soon as I ripped his mask off and saw him for who he was {a narcissist, traitor/serial cheater, pathological liar & energy thief/psychic vampireamongst other things},

I ran as fast as I could}.

I am focused on detoxing further and healing.

I have to keep the lessons present so that the next time toxicity enters into my life, I detox it with conviction.

Meanwhile, I am singing freedom to myself…

Please enjoy Freedom by George Michael…

FREEDOM! ’90 LYRICS

[Chorus]
I won’t let you down
I will not give you up

Gotta have some faith in the sound
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got
I won’t let you down
So please don’t give me up
Because I would really, really love to stick around

[Verse 1]
Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn’t know what I wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirl’s pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me

To win the race, a prettier face
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV
But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I’m gonna get me some happy

[Pre-Chorus]
I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I told you so
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone else I’ve got to be
Take back your picture in a frame

Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Verse 2]
Heaven knows we sure had some fun, boy
What a kick, just a buddy and me
We had every big-shot goodtime band on the run, boy
We were living in a fantasy

We won the race, got out of the place
Went back home, got a brand new face for the boys on MTV

But today the way I play the game has got to change oh yeah
Now I’m gonna get myself happy

[Pre-Chorus]
I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I stopped the show
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don’t think that I’ll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Bridge]
Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell

When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well

Posing for another picture
Everybody’s got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last

That’s what you get
I say that’s what you get
That’s what you get for changing your mind

And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Outro]
I’ll hold on to my freedom
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it’s got to be
Lose the face now
I’ve got to live.”

Reflection for today…Radiate Boundless Love -Buddha & Richard Ashcroft

6 Jan

“Radiate boundless love towards the entire world

— above, below, and across

— unhindered, without ill will, without enmity.”

– The Buddha

(From the Metta Sutta)

richard ashcroft leave me high

*

Please enjoy Leave Me High by Richard Ashcroft…

Richard Ashcroft’s angelic voice feels like such a healing vibration. I truly feel his soul radiating boundless love. Listening to the beauty of this song brings me to the point of tears. Richard is indeed blessed with such a gift and talent. Through his art, he is able to contribute to the healing of the world {like other artists}.

In Leave Me High, Richard says that “no love can fulfill like this love that you give.” He isn’t specifically talking about a lover in a typical romantic sense {although he could be}. Another possibility is that he is referencing self-love; where no one else can complete you or fulfill you like your own love can.

The idea of self-love as a source of spiritual strength and healing is discussed at length in the mastery of love by Don Miguel Ruiz. Self-love is the key to happiness and peace in our relationships with others and ourselves. For Don Miguel Ruiz, self-love is non-negotiable because it is so married to respect. It is the key ingredient for a spiritually and emotionally fulfilled life.

Humans hunt for love. We feel that we need that love because we believe we don’t have love, because we don’t love ourselves. We hunt for love in other humans just like us, expecting to get love from them when these humans are in the same condition as we are. They don’t love themselves either, so how much love can we get from them? We merely create a bigger need that isn’t real; we keep hunting and hunting, but in the wrong place, because other humans don’t have the love we need.”

I suspect that Richard is referring to God or a universal/higher power where no one can fulfill him like this divine love does. He sings, …”leave me high, leave me looking over mountains in the heavens…”. The song has a spiritual vibe to me and love is equated with ascension and enlightenment, “your love take me higher, bring me light, everything.”

The main thesis to me is “take those chains from your heart and soul.” In essence, Richard is speaking about emancipation but from what? I think the chains are the walls that we keep to protect our hearts.  We can become imprisoned by all the ways that we try to protect ourselves from pain, loss/grief, suffering and betrayal. By wearing armour on our hearts and souls, we risk missing out on real intimacy, love and healing. It is much wiser to listen to Richard and “take those chains from your heart and soul…”

*

What is your interpretation of this song?

I am by no means right or wrong.

I just thought it would be fun to try to interpret it.

Have you read the mastery of love?

Lyrics

“Leave me high
Leave me looking
Leave me low
Leave me warm
No love can fulfill
Like this love that you give
Leave me high
Leave me looking
Over mountains in the heavens
No love can fulfill
Like this love that you give

Hello, hello, hello, hello
Yeah, hello, hello, hello, hello

Wasted moments come together
Like a boat on a stream
Your love take me higher
Bring me light, everything
Oh take those chains from within my soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on

Hello, hello, hello, hello

Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Through the mountains over heavens
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Through the mountains over heavens
Through the mountains over heavens
Leave me high
Leave me looking.”

Reflection for today…Allergic To Negativity- Albert Einstein

1 Jan

“Stay away from negative people.

They have a problem for every solution.”

-Albert Einstein

rubiks-cube-jigsaw-puzzle_Ruwix-copyright

*

We all know people that focus on the problems rather than the solutions.

With reflection, we can see how we fit in those self-destructive psychological patterns. Then we can focus on creative problem-solving and not ruminating on the problem/s. We can emancipate ourselves from those mental cul-de-sacs.

Happy New Year.

Stream of Consciousness Reflections…

15 Jul

Aloha.

I have been wanting to do these stream of consciousness posts for quite some time. I had the idea to do them months ago but they have only manifested now. I have a sneaking suspicion that I am going to write them mostly at night because my mind is more lucid. Aside from this, I just adore the night. {I also equally adore the day, the sun and the sunlight}. The moonlight illuminates my soul and all that is hidden in the day is revealed- my heart’s desires. I feel so inspired to write at night. After all, I am of the nocturnal persuasion.

{I simply adore DJ Shadow’s music. This song/the whole entroducing album is a masterpiece}.

I am going to just write what is on my mind at the time without over-thinking or over-analyzing. It is going to be chaos, anarchy and complete freedom. Having a blog means having complete creative license to create the type of blog that you want. This carte blanche enables me to write when the mood strikes since there are no deadlines. I think it will be a fun experiment of sorts. I only hope that you enjoy it.

Peace & Love…

Story For Home by Gabriel Byrne…

1 Nov

Gabriel Byrne is one of my favourite people.

Gabriel Byrne Reflective

Even though I have never had the honor of meeting him, he intrigues me in the most beautiful way.

He is a very soulful person who seems to be deeply compassionate, sensitive, introspective and intelligent.

In this short clip, you can feel Gabriel’s conviction in his words and voice.

{His voice is medicine for my soul}.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eYvTpZTZFU

His suggestion of “imagining Ireland” is a great segue into this post.

*

In this short clip, Gabriel discusses his hunger for travel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ-rQcJF6Ns

He says that he always had a desire to travel and move.

In his birthplace of Ireland, Gabriel feels that he is always colliding with his past.

He feels defined by his past in Dublin.

Whereas in New York he feels that he has a clean slate- a tabula rasa where he is “free to compose his own present.”

Gabriel lived in Los Angeles for five years but he decided to leave. He feels that when you live in a place without clearly defined seasons, your sense of time becomes distorted. Time passes almost invisibly yet quickly.

*

Gabriel decided to move to New York and he lives there presently.

He compares Los Angeles to New York and he focuses on their restless nature.

“It’s a restless city…Los Angeles even more so than New York is a city where people come to…it has to exist for those people who can’t exist in places outside of it.

It exists for people who become in a way…who outgrow or out-dream or out-fantasize their own places

For Gabriel, Los Angeles is a land of paradox.

It offers new beginnings and freedom yet an ambiance of melancholy haunts it.

He notes, “The sense of freedom and light and being able to re-invent oneself is very strong there…but there’s also a sense of melancholy that pervades the place.”

I found the following observation to be the most intriguing.

“It is a place where people think that if they get successful enough, they are not going to die.”

In essence, Gabriel is using memento mori to analyze people’s avoidance of death. It is almost as if success was used as a passport out of death.

This incisive observation is very Buddhist as Buddha believe in impermanence {i.e. everything dies}.

*

One doesn’t need to have a gypsy soul to want to move or travel.

We’ve all dreamed of moving our proverbial roots to far away magical lands.

I know I have…

I believe the term is called wanderlust.

Wanderlust

Ireland is definitely one of the countries that I long to visit.

Majestic Ireland…

It is the birth place of two of my favourite actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers and of course Gabriel Byrne. They often speak about Ireland’s sublime beauty.

Ireland’s Majestic Northern Lights…

To be honest there are so many places I would love to visit.

Since I was a child I fell in love with Egyptian history and mythology.

Ancient Egypt has fascinated me and still fascinates me to this day.

Egypt is one place I would love to visit.

Egypt: A Land of Alchemical Beauty

Iceland also seems like a mystical land full of haunting beauty.

The Magical Northern Lights in Iceland…

I would love to experience the northern lights- aurora borealis.

I would love to experience the beauty of Iceland that resonates in the music of Björk and Sigur Rós.

Japan is also another country I definitely want to visit.

I love Japanese culture and I love the humility and resilience of Japanese people.

Other places I would like to visit:

New Zealand…

Waitomo Worm Cave in New Zealand…

Australia…

and Hawaii.

I would also love to visit Buddhist temples through-out the world.

I would really like to explore all the countries of Latin America- especially Cuba.

{To be honest, there are too many places I would love to visit but I just mentioned a few to not make this post too long}.

I think travel enriches one’s life in so many ways.

It open one’s mind and possibly even one’s heart.

Travelling connects us with our shared humanity and our interdependence.

Where would you like to travel to?

Where would you like to move to?

Do you agree with Gabriel?
