The Art of Listening In HBO’s In Treatment…

12 May

Listening is truly a lost art.

In Treatment Dr Paul Weston's Hand Gestures

How often do you encounter people in life that you can tell are obviously not listening? It is the most common experience.

Sadly, it has become rare when someone actually listens to you and values what you have to say.

In Treatment Talk To Me

In Treatment was a half an hour drama on HBO that starred Gabriel Byrne. The show was about the art of listening, psychotherapy, dysfunctions, neuroses, ethics, fears, self-sabotage, mental illness, relationships, conflict, trauma, pain, suffering, healing, resilience, etc.

Compassion and humanity are at the root of psychotherapy and In Treatment respectively. They speak about the deep need to be listened to without judgment. I have a great respect for psychology. It was one of my areas of study and I have intuitively known it is my vocation since childhood.

In treatment was even studied in universities at the time {I am not sure if it still is}. Counselling psychology students discussed in treatment in classes. Its pedagogical purpose was to teach students how to live their potential as psychologist and to help their clients heal.

*

In Treatment is like a prism that reflects the spectrum of humanity.

It can be Shakespearean in its dramatic storylines, intimate revelations and profound intellectual discussions.

{Side note: this is Paul’s wave machine in the introduction}.

It is a cerebral show that dives deep into the Alice in wonderland rabbit hole of the psyche. In treatment relies heavily on the art of acting. Gabriel and the rest of the cast really shine in this thirty-minute drama. The skilled actors play off the script, each other, emotions and body language. They have no special effects to rely on- just their acting skills. {Side note: Gabriel won a golden globe for his performance. Many other actors and the show itself were nominated for numerous awards}.

Gabriel’s character is the compassionate Dr.Paul Weston.

He is the wounded healer, secret keeper, listener, teacher and psychologist.

In Treatment He's Listening

Psychotherapy is based on trust and vulnerability- spiritual and emotional nakedness. There is a strong emotional connection between Paul and all of his patients. First, he has to earn their trust and convince them to trust him and open up.

He must analyze their issues beneath the masks they wear.

He has to discern the truth from lies, distortions and projections.

All of his patients have complex problems and dysfunctional patterns of behaviour.

Some are based on the complexities of being in a relationship and sharing a life with someone despite conflicting personalities or desires. With Jake and Amy, Paul is a mediator between them. He uses conflict resolution, helps them clarify their real issues/emotions and helps them decide on their course of action.

Others are more individual problems with roots in childhood.

Regardless of how the trauma manifests itself, what is evident is that Paul is responsible for his patients.

In some cases, he is the only person that his patients have to rely on.

*

In treatment examines many themes. One is the issue of transference.

Transference can happen in the therapeutic process. The psychologist has to maintain their boundaries and respect their professional code of ethics.

How do you treat a patient that thinks they are in love with you?

What if they insist on their declarations of love?

What if they play mind games and employ manipulation?

How do navigate that?

*

Intergenerational trauma is another topic that is examined in the show.

Alex is not even aware of the impact of how his father murdered his grandfather traumatized him. He is also not conscious of how his childhood and his father’s toxic masculinity traumatized him.

*

How do you deal with the emotional impact of listening to people’s problems all day?

Many psychologists go to their own psychologist for therapy and to consult about their patients. Paul goes to Gina for this purpose. Their relationship is quite strained but he desperately needs that outlet.

*

Some quotes from this video stood out to me in particular…

“It is hard to see so many people in pain and not be able to do anything to help them in some way.” -Paul

“Maybe helping is easier than feeling the pain.” -Laura

I can attest to this feeling of helplessness. It is very painful for me to see or know that someone is in pain without being able to do anything to ease their suffering.

Laura’s observation has some merit. Sometimes it is easier to help than feel. Sometimes it just hurts too much.

“We are not Gods, we can’t save anybody.” -Gina

Gina’s statement is true.

We cannot save anybody.

We can only help them to save themselves.

“It is possible to live in a world where people panic, where people let each other down, where they disappoint each other but still help each other out.” -Paul

I think this is the most realistic observation.

It is still possible to help each other despite our flaws and limitations.

Paul asks Alex where he wants his therapy to lead him. He answers painfully, “some place where I feel less shitty about myself.”

There is something in Blair Underwood’s voice when he says “some place where I feel less shitty about myself.” We can all relate to this sentiment.

“I thought that is what we are on the earth for- to help each other- to step up to the plate when somebody needs us.” -Paul

I have to agree with Paul.

I think it is noble to derive your life’s purpose from altruism and compassion.

Finding meaning in helping others is something I can deeply relate to.

“There are other places where you can feel safe and here in this room is one of those places.” -Paul

The therapist’s office is like a sanctuary from the chaos of the world.

Paul really wants to help his patients find their own answers to enlighten themselves, empower themselves and solve their problems.

With Sophie, Paul wanted her to have her own epiphanies.

In this scene, Sophie has empowered herself enough to confront her father on his abandonment and absence as a father.

Paul’s role is not to be the judge but to guide them to reconnect and re-establish their relationship. The journey is painful but worthwhile.

*

Paul’s observations/analysis is incisive.

He really gets to the root of his patient’s suffering.

{It reminds me of Robin Williams’ character the psychologist Sean McGuire in Goodwill Hunting}.

His patients always challenge him and often test his boundaries.

*

It should be noted that Paul has his own problems to contend with.

I think it is vital to observe that psychologists are human and imperfect. They have to deal with their own life and its challenges while trying to help others heal and figure out their life’s labyrinth.

*

Happy birthday to Gabriel Byrne today!!!

Stream of Consciousness Reflections…The Spiritual Lessons of The Pandemic…

16 Apr

Aloha dear friends/readers.

How is life treating you? I pray well.

I started this blog many years ago to reflect on life,  ideas, theories, philosophies, truths, emotions, people, the world, the inner workings of my mind, etc.

Perhaps it was also an attempt to access the locked room in my mind- my subconscious.

I have always lived a life of quiet reflection to connect more deeply with my spirituality and my self. Now I think it is the quintessential time for all of us to reflect on the life we were living and how we are living now. This pandemic and quarantine have taught us all so much. {I am aware that our lessons are tailored to each of us}.

What is still important? What remnants of the past carry over to the present? Are your ethics and priorities the same? Do you have more clarity now? Will the changes in ourselves, in others and our lives be sustainable? We will go back to how we were when this over? Hopefully, we are fluid like the ebbs and flows of the ocean.

I am reflecting on what I am supposed to learn and the hidden lessons in the chaos.

Compassion is still the highest form of love because it is spiritual love.

Altruism exists– even though the critics/haters disagree. {Unfortunately, selfishness also exists}.

We are all interconnected. We all affect each other and in some cases, we all need each other. {Perhaps now we can see the invisible threads that unite us. The ego always works to disconnect us from each other through the illusion of seperation}. In essence, we are all waves in the same ocean of humanity.

Courage can be born out of necessity.

Health is wealth.

Reflection/inner introspection is a vital and meditative activity for your soul and mind.

Fear can seduce us into paralysis if we let it.

Creative problem-solving is vital in life.

We all need to take care of our mental health {as well as our physical health}- especially now. Depression and anxiety can slowly invite its way into our lives if we are not mindful.

People mean more to us than we realized- especially loved ones or family.

Stream of Consciousness Reflections…Mysoulsonfire…

6 Jan

This is a little story I wrote in 2015 but never posted it.

I decided to post it now.

Sadly, I no longer feel the same way about the person that inspired it.

He betrayed me with such passionate cruelty.

He shattered my soul.

He slowly tortured my heart and destroyed it from the inside out.

Through my pain and suffering, wisdom has illuminated me.

He is not my soulmate- my true love; therefore, I now dedicate this story to my mystery soulmate (whoever he is)…

*

Dedicated to all the Soul Mates out there…

It is said that when soul mates are about to meet, their energy starts to entangle. They start to exchange energy as they prepare to make a soul connection.

They met lifetimes ago but measured in human time it amounts to about thirty years ago. In the dawn of youth, their paths crossed briefly. Mysteriously, their families were deeply intertwined yet they did not see each other at social events. One wonders if they ever caught a glimpse of each other but did not really notice each other. Perhaps at the time, they did not recognize each other’s souls. Each set on their own path until they met again.

*

They set each other’s souls on fire…

She is humbled by his compassionate heart and spiritual presence. He is someone who gives without expecting anything in return. He knows the true meaning of altruism and he lives by it. One of his passions is to help people although he does not give himself credit. His humility is a part of his essence and she greatly respects his humble nature. He is compassionate, supportive and kind. He is a sensitive soul and a natural healer. He has a heart of gold.

He is her gift from the universe and she is so grateful for him.

*

“Divine timing allowed their souls to become entangled- enmeshed.” The universe did not allow them to meet until the time was just right. Each one had to experience a certain amount of suffering and heartbreak in order to mature and later on heal together. The stars had to be perfectly aligned for their meeting to occur. As the writer Paulo Coelho would say, “the universe conspired” so that they would meet.

Their meeting was truly electric and people noticed the attraction and connection. Family members took note of the kinship and growing friendship. Their lives were undergoing a metamorphosis as they grew to know each other. Each revolutionized the other’s life {as is the case with soul mates}.

He said the most romantic thing to her…”you came into my life like an apocalypse.” To the untrained ear, that may sound negative but to her soul, it was music and poetry. Her love of dystopic and apocalyptic art was mirrored in his words. Although apocalypse denotes endings, to them it was the genesis of their soulful romance.

He is her spiritual mirror and reflection {and she is his}. They reflect each other’s spiritual light and darkness. They challenge each other to learn, grow/evolve and together they heal and love. Together they have learned the meaning of faith and what it means to truly believe in someone. This faith has matured them and strengthened them in ways they are unaware of.

With him, she does not need her metaphorical armour. She is spiritually naked and vulnerable. She trusts that the universe beautifully orchestrated their meeting and their relationship for a higher purpose. He found her heart despite her hiding it. Despite her fear, love prevailed.

Anam Cara is the Irish word for soul friend. If you meet one of these kindred spirits, you should consider yourself blessed. They transcend the label “best friend” for they are the utmost manifestation of love and friendship. Compassion guides their actions as their loving presence is felt.

She saw this image on Pinterest and it warmed her heart to think of the possibilities of her life with him.

What Are You To Me? Lyrics

“(Day dream… day dream…) Day dream…(day dream…)

So many times I’ve overflowed

So many faces come and go

I play my cards into the sun And try to work out What you are to me To me

Been here before A million open doors Only one will set me free

So I fall against the wall And try to work out What you are to me, to me, to me, to me… To me…

Inside my eyes The answer lies Something I can’t see

Another day Another way It’s the same to me, to me To me…, to me…, to me… (what’s wrong?) To me… (to me…) To me… (to me…) To me… (to me…) To me… (to me…)

Reflection for today…Respect Yourself -Don Miguel Ruiz & Björk

5 Jan

“Everyone has a price, and life respects that price.

But that price is not measured in dollars or in gold;

It is measured in love.

More, than that, it is measured in self-love.

How much you love yourself–that is your price–

and life respects the price.

When you love yourself, your price is very high,

which means your tolerance for self-abuse is very low.

It’s very low because you respect yourself.”

Don Miguel Ruiz, Wisdom From The Mastery of Love

I Am Nobody's Bitch 001

When I was a child my mother taught me to respect people. What she didn’t tell me is that you need to have boundaries so that people will respect you. Not only do you have to have boundaries but you have to strictly enforce them as well.

I used to be so afraid of confrontations and of speaking up. I would always worry that I might upset, hurt or offend someone. To an extent, I was also afraid of being disliked and rejected. Since I did not like myself, I was so hungry for other people’s approval {even though I did not consciously know it at the time}.

The price of this silence was putting up with some disrespect. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t regret it because I deeply regret it. I also have to acknowledge that without these experiences, then I would not have come to these realizations.

They are lessons that I am still learning and life only keeps offering you more tests.

Being “nice” is an invitation for people to test your boundaries. These days, I would much rather have respect than just be a “nice” person. It seems like a universal law that unless you respect yourself then no one truly will.

Another thing that I learned is that some people do not deserve your respect or your presence in their lives. Please let me clarify what I mean. Everyone deserves basic respect as human beings. The respect that I am speaking about is the respect that people earn through their friendship, loyalty and compassion. Some people just do not deserve that level of respect from you. Some people do not deserve your friendship, loyalty and compassion.

Trust and respect need to be earned for them to hold any gravitas/weight.

Lyrics

Army of Me

Björk

[Verse 1]
“Stand up
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Verse 2]
You’re alright
There’s nothing wrong
Self-sufficience, please!
And get to work

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me

[Verse 3]
You’re on your own now
We won’t save you
Your rescue squad
Is too exhausted

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me.”

Story For Home by Gabriel Byrne…

1 Nov

Gabriel Byrne is one of my favourite people.

Gabriel Byrne Reflective

Even though I have never had the honor of meeting him, he intrigues me in the most beautiful way.

He is a very soulful person who seems to be deeply compassionate, sensitive, introspective and intelligent.

In this short clip, you can feel Gabriel’s conviction in his words and voice.

{His voice is medicine for my soul}.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eYvTpZTZFU

His suggestion of “imagining Ireland” is a great segue into this post.

*

In this short clip, Gabriel discusses his hunger for travel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ-rQcJF6Ns

He says that he always had a desire to travel and move.

In his birthplace of Ireland, Gabriel feels that he is always colliding with his past.

He feels defined by his past in Dublin.

Whereas in New York he feels that he has a clean slate- a tabula rasa where he is “free to compose his own present.”

Gabriel lived in Los Angeles for five years but he decided to leave. He feels that when you live in a place without clearly defined seasons, your sense of time becomes distorted. Time passes almost invisibly yet quickly.

*

Gabriel decided to move to New York and he lives there presently.

He compares Los Angeles to New York and he focuses on their restless nature.

“It’s a restless city…Los Angeles even more so than New York is a city where people come to…it has to exist for those people who can’t exist in places outside of it.

It exists for people who become in a way…who outgrow or out-dream or out-fantasize their own places

For Gabriel, Los Angeles is a land of paradox.

It offers new beginnings and freedom yet an ambiance of melancholy haunts it.

He notes, “The sense of freedom and light and being able to re-invent oneself is very strong there…but there’s also a sense of melancholy that pervades the place.”

I found the following observation to be the most intriguing.

“It is a place where people think that if they get successful enough, they are not going to die.”

In essence, Gabriel is using memento mori to analyze people’s avoidance of death. It is almost as if success was used as a passport out of death.

This incisive observation is very Buddhist as Buddha believe in impermanence {i.e. everything dies}.

*

One doesn’t need to have a gypsy soul to want to move or travel.

We’ve all dreamed of moving our proverbial roots to far away magical lands.

I know I have…

I believe the term is called wanderlust.

Wanderlust

Ireland is definitely one of the countries that I long to visit.

Majestic Ireland…

It is the birth place of two of my favourite actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers and of course Gabriel Byrne. They often speak about Ireland’s sublime beauty.

Ireland’s Majestic Northern Lights…

To be honest there are so many places I would love to visit.

Since I was a child I fell in love with Egyptian history and mythology.

Ancient Egypt has fascinated me and still fascinates me to this day.

Egypt is one place I would love to visit.

Egypt: A Land of Alchemical Beauty

Iceland also seems like a mystical land full of haunting beauty.

The Magical Northern Lights in Iceland…

I would love to experience the northern lights- aurora borealis.

I would love to experience the beauty of Iceland that resonates in the music of Björk and Sigur Rós.

Japan is also another country I definitely want to visit.

I love Japanese culture and I love the humility and resilience of Japanese people.

Other places I would like to visit:

New Zealand…

Waitomo Worm Cave in New Zealand…

Australia…

and Hawaii.

Aloha From Paradise…

I would also love to visit Buddhist temples through-out the world.

I would really like to explore all the countries of Latin America- especially Cuba.

Che Guevara Grafitti in Habana Cuba

{To be honest, there are too many places I would love to visit but I just mentioned a few to not make this post too long}.

I think travel enriches one’s life in so many ways.

It open one’s mind and possibly even one’s heart.

Travelling connects us with our shared humanity and our interdependence.

Where would you like to travel to?

Where would you like to move to?

Do you agree with Gabriel?

Reflection for today…The Ocean of Consciousness -Rumi…

18 Oct

Rumi You Are The Ocean In An Entire Drop

I remember reading some Buddhist teachings many moons ago that spoke about the ocean of consciousness.

It spoke about each of us being a wave in the ocean.

We think that we are completely independent; that we are a single wave because of the illusion of our ego.

Our ego clouds and distorts our perception creating a false sense of self.

It is complicated as in Western society there is so much focus on the self: self-improvement, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-doubt, etc.

The truth is that while it may seem that we are individual waves,

we are actually part of the ocean; the ocean of humanity.

*

I really cannot understand how some people can have no compassion for each other.

At the root of this poverty of the spirit is a lack of compassion for the self, selfishness and an overindulgence of the ego.

{One cannot offer compassion if you have no compassion for yourself}.

As I said to my friend, if we don’t help each other then we will all sink.

I know that we all have our individual problems but if we just focus on them, then we cannot get out of our heads and the prison of selfishness.

There is a delicate balance between having compassion and helping others with helping yourself and protecting yourself from harm. Boundaries are necessary.

I always struggle with how to have compassion while not losing myself.

The sad truth is that many people mistake kindness for weakness.

The truth is that it takes great strength to be compassionate in this world.

It takes great spiritual strength to open your heart and mind to offer your compassion.

*

When the triple disasters were taking place in Japan in 2011, I was horrified. I was watching the news on the internet. I constantly watched BBC, CBC and Al Jazeera with tears in my eyes.

I could not help crying as I watched the news.

It hurt my heart and soul to witness such suffering.

I could not believe that on top of the tsunami and the earthquake there was a nuclear situation as well. As I thought of Fukushima, I was reminded of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. I was very concerned and afraid for Japan. I still am.

While I had no family, friends or loved ones in Japan, I felt deep compassion for the Japanese.

It didn’t matter in the least if I didn’t know a single soul in Japan.

We are all interconnected and if Japan was suffering and grieving then we all were.

I still think of Japan and how the triple disasters affected and affect people today- especially the effects of nuclear contamination/radiation.

The reason that I share this is because I had an epiphany then.

My good friend and I were having coffee one day {during the disasters in 2011}.

I was telling him about what was happening in Japan.

He stopped me in the middle of my sentence and said very coldly, “you know what…I just don’t care.”

That is when I realized that something inside of him died.

To be honest, I was very disturbed by his comment and his attitude.

Upon deep reflection, I felt sadness and compassion for him.

He had just gone through a very painful and dark time with the illness of his mother. I know that this experience had a very damaging effect on him.

I think he was most likely spiritually disconnected and emotionally numb at that point.

He probably had nothing left to give as he was in desperate need of healing.

*

Compassion is the greatest gift you can offer someone.

Compassion is what makes us truly human.

Our humanity is rooted in compassion.

*Remember that we are all in this life together.

We all depend on each other.

We are all interdependent as waves in the ocean of humanity.

Here is a brief description that I copied and pasted from their biography.

From this link: http://www.niyazmusic.com/#!/biography/

Niyaz, which means ‘yearning’ in Persian and Urdu, was formed in 2005 by Azam Ali, multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian and two-time Grammy nominated producer and electronic musician Carmen Rizzo.

The band borrows from an historic lineage of Middle Eastern poets setting verse to music, perhaps most famously known today through the work of the 13th century Persian poet Rumi and the endless barrage of quotes attributed to him on Twitter and Facebook.

While the immediate goal of Niyaz was to explore the music and identity of Iranians living in exile and struggling to maintain their cultural identity in the modern world on their first two acclaimed records, Niyaz and Nine Heavens, the band has expanded that theme with Sumud.”

Azam Ali is the singer with the heavenly voice in Niyaz.

She has also been a part of another band named VAS. Their albums include: Sunyata (1997), Offerings (1998), In the Garden of Souls (2000) and Feast of Silence (2004).

Azam has released seven albums between Niyaz and VAS.

Niyaz’s albums include: Niyaz (2005), Nine Heavens (2008) and Sumud (2012).

She has also released four solo albums: Portals of Grace (2002), Elysium for the Brave (2006), From Night to the Edge of Day (2011) and Lamentation of Swans- A Journey Towards Silence (2013).

“[Pulse of the people]
[If it feel good to ya]
[It’s okay to smile]
can’t get but so far in this life being selfish.
a free spirit
a giving heart
that’s what wealth is
we rich when we recognize the power that’s within
it’s not all about the money
it’s the time that we spend
it’s the hand that we lend
to a friend when we can
it’s the kind words you gave to that homeless man
without judging that man
it’s the fact that you gave;
and showed compassion ’cause he humbly asked you for change
i know the blessings I receive is not just for me
a shared blessing comes back to you
that’s what I believe
to help someone in need
to throw down some rope
to be a ray of hope
ya know?
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you just gotta be helpful
when life gets stressful
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you gotta help somebody
what goes around is gonna come back ’round
what goes around is gonna come back ’round
when you help somebody
donate my extra clothes
to a clothing drive.
help the lady cross the street
bring her bags inside.
send a letter to a prisoner to lift his spirit.
be a mentor to a child ’cause it takes a village.
lend a hand, help a brother
that I learned the hard way
all for one
one for all
it got to be the squad way
the early bird get the worm
it’s corny but it’s true
first impressions last forever
careful how you move
first you crawl
then you walk
the 1 before the 2
nothing new under the sun
the golden rule
lazy people work the hardest
that’s my motivation
everything in moderation
even moderation
yo
yo, when you put out your hand,
is it to give or to receive?
see what goes around will come back around
I do believe
that the positive and negative is relative to where you live
not from experience
that’s what we tell the kids
’cause they are the seeds
the stronger the root
the stronger the tree
if we eat from the fruit
the stronger we be
if we do it today
tomorrow we free.”

“There’s unconditional love there.

Johnny was suffering from heavy drug and alcohol addiction.

His spiritual strength and June’s love empowered him to transcend his suffering, eradicate his demons and heal from the prison of addiction.

Johnny in his autobiography:
“She’s The Greatest Woman I Have Ever Known.
Nobody Else, Except My Mother, Comes Close.”

Johnny didn’t just love June…he ADORED her….

*

When he speaks about June’s love, I think Johnny is speaking about her spiritual presence.

It is through your spiritual presence that you can really be there for someone because you are present and mindful in that moment.

You are able to open your heart and soul to offer your compassion and love.

June’s undying love and fierce loyalty was always present.

I still believe that love is loyalty and loyalty is love.

Loyalty is how we prove our love and express it.

It is our gift to our beloved.

Love isn’t simply a feeling but it is action.

*

Real love heals and gives spiritual strength.

It is that powerful.

I Adore Love Letters Because They Truly Reveal The Soul…

{Lets resurrect the lost art of letter writing…}

Johnny & June…A Marriage of Equals

Johnny wrote the song Flesh and Blood about his love for June…

“…So when this day was ended I was still not satisfied

For I knew everything I touched would wither and would die

And love is all that will remain and grow from all these seeds…”

*

I should also mention that Johnny Cash died on September 12th, 2003, less than four months after June died.

{It has been said that he was holding her hand when she died}.

Many say that his health complications worsened after June died.

Some even speculate that he died from a broken heart.

Johnny & June Lived In Love For 35 Years…

They are buried next to each other in Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

The movie Walk The Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon is about Johnny’s life and his and June’s love story.

{He really should have won an Oscar for his performance in my humble opinion}.

In celebration of their love and love overall, please enjoy Ring of Fire sung by Johnny Cash

{It was co-written by June about her and Johnny’s passionate ascension in to love}.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq4a2te0yhE

“Love is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring of fire.”

A Loving Glance Reveals Your Heart

Reflection for today…The Power of Compassion -Dalai Lama

15 Apr
“If a person has never encountered love towards himself or herself from any quarter, it is a very sad thing.
But if that person can meet even one person who will show unconditional love– simply acceptance and compassion —
if he knows that he is an object of someone else’s affection and love,
it is bound to have an impact, and this will be appreciated.
Because there is a seed in himself, this act of love will start to catalyse or ripen that seed.”

Reflection for today…Awakening Compassion -Pema Chödrön

9 Jan

Learning how to be kind to ourselves is important.

When we look into our own hearts and begin to discover what is confused and what is brilliant, what is bitter and what is sweet, it isn’t just ourselves that we’re discovering.

We’re discovering the universe.

When we discover the buddha that we are, we realize that everything and everyone is Buddha.

We discover that everything is awake, and everyone is awake.

Everything and everyone is precious and whole and good. When we regard thoughts and emotions with humor and openness, that’s how we perceive the universe.”

Reflection for today…Compassion Is The Key To Enlightenment -Buddha

15 Dec

“For those of you who want to attain enlightenment,

do not study many teachings.

Only study one.

What is it?

It is great compassion.

Whoever has great compassion has all Buddha’s qualities in his hand.”

Darfur Refugees
“Angelina Jolie, the Oscar winning actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, holds a mentally disturbed boy, as he is tied with a rope in a camp in Oure Cassoni, Chad, 2007.
Angelina Jolie met the 7 year-old boy while spending two days visiting Oure Cassoni, a refugee camp close to the Sudan border.
Almost 27,000 refugees lives there and it was opened in 2004.”
“I also spent time with SOS Children’s villages staff, and we visited a 7-year-old boy that was held with a rope to a pole by his family.
This to keep him from wandering away, they said.
According to SOS, the boy saw his village bombed when he was 3- years old.
He hid alone in the bush for 2 days before his family found him and they all fled across the border.
SOS Children’s villages launched an emergency relief program for refugees from Darfur in 2006.
They focus on providing psychosocial care for traumatized children and their parents.
They presently care for about 230 children and adults.
Many have been living in the camp since 2004.
Many children experience symptoms such as nightmares, bedwetting and behavioral problems.
These children are often in a state of anxiety and they often have hallucinations. The children attend group therapy sessions where they play, sing and paint.
They work closely together with UNHCR and International Rescue Committee in the camp.”

Reflection for today…Humility Is Compassionate -C.S. Lewis

11 Dec
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself,
but thinking of yourself less.”

The elements of this coin focus your attention on humble thoughts.
In the center on the front is a door.
This door is from the Maisel Synagogue in Prague.
In regards to an arrogant person the Creator says: “I and he cannot dwell together.” The door to the Creator’s house
allows for the humble of spirit to enter. The door itself, represented by the Hebrew letter Dalet, is the property of humility and lowliness.
The letter Dalet is the large letter in the middle of the reverse side of the coin On the front, the phrase “I am but dust and ashes” , from Genesis 18:27, is written in English and Hebrew.
Hebrew – V’anokhi `afar va’efer
The plant below this phrase on either side is the hyssop – the lowly hyssop represents modesty and humility. It never becomes proud because of its numerous useful qualities, but remains humble in appearance and modest in its demands.

On the reverse (“tails”) side, the phrase “Know from whence you came”, is written in English and Hebrew.
This reminds you that once upon a time you were just a small bit of matter, and have no reason to be puffed up with pride.
Hebrew – da may’ayin ba’ta
In the center is the Hebrew letter Dalet, characterizing lowliness, the consciousness of possessing nothing of your own.
“434” is the numerical value of the Hebrew word “Dalet”. There are many meanings associated with this number and Dalet for you to explore if you so chose.

DWENNIMMEN (djwin-knee-mann): “Ram’s horns.”
“West African symbol of strength (in mind, body and soul), humility, wisdom and learning.
The ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble. “

What a brilliant quote!

Humility as a cure for  ego and selfishness- as prescribed by C.S. Lewis.
