Tea Reflections… A Lovely Cup of Tea -Jaime Oliver

18 May

Jaime Oliver is a food alchemist and food revolutionary. I highly respect Jaime for his infinite passion, culinary talents and especially his health advocacy. He taught me how to cook after all. I used his Food Revolution book and YouTube videos as guides. As they say, “when the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I was finally ready to learn.

Although I have just started my culinary journey, Jaime Oliver gave me the supportive push to begin. He is such a passionate and gifted teacher. I love to learn from him. He taught me the excitement of cooking through creative expression. Jaime is like an alchemist experimenting and creating in his kitchen laboratory. I am always thrilled to discover his new creations.

{I hope to include more posts on Jaime Oliver in the future}.

Jaime asks, “what is your ‘hot toddy’ and herbal drink of choice?”

*

In this short video clip, Jaime teaches about herbal teas, herbs and spices; their medicinal/healing properties; how to experiment with flavours; how to make a lovely cup of herbal tea. He uses the cancer-fighting, antioxidant-rich turmeric which also happens to be high in iron. Jaime tells us that you can absorb more iron when you add citrus fruit {vitamin c}. He notes that spices {e.g. cinnamon and fennel seeds} are packed with micronutrients. Herbs are full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals {e.g. thyme is full of calcium}.

Jaime says that heated fruit extracts beautiful flavours; conversely, chilled tea has a different flavour spectrum. I can attest to that as I love to drink hibiscus tea both heated and chilled {which is technically dried hibiscus flowers. My love of hibiscus is profound. I have made hibiscus popsicles in the past. They are so refreshing in the hot summer days}.

Tea is one of my favourite ways to hydrate {along with chlorophyll water}. I drink tea all day and I can agree that it is a lovely way to start and finish the day. How better to reflect on life than over a cup of tea? Most people invite you to go out for coffee but I prefer tea. What about you?

What soothes the soul better than a cup of tea? I agree with Jaime that tea is comforting and therapeutic. Perhaps tea could end wars, mend broken hearts, awaken creative passions, give birth to enlightening ideas and heal relationships? Well, that might be a little unrealistic. The truth is that tea is my elixir of life.

What about you?

Or are you a coffee connoisseur?

Have you tried to make Jaime Oliver’s herbal teas?

What are your favourite teas?

{I hope to explore the science of tea and its healing properties in future tea reflections…

I will also include my favourite teas}.

Reflection for today…Freedom From Toxicity -George Michael

7 May

George Michael {Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou} had the voice and heart of an angel.

{He often donated anonymously to numerous charities and humanitarian organizations}.

He remains one of my favourite singers/artists.

George Michael With Guitar

His song freedom was a push back against his record label Sony {at the time}.

Freedom Video CollageGeorge Michael Freedom I Don't Belong To You & You Don't Belong To Me

The song freedom can also represent freedom from toxicity, lies, manipulation, deceit, betrayal, selfishness, toxic situations, patterns of behaviour, thoughts, emotions, toxic strangers/family/friends/acquaintances/romantic entanglements.

How do you determine if a person or situation is toxic?

The toxicity lies in how damaging the person or situation is to yourself and your life.

Often their toxicity is like a contagion that infects your life as well.

The question you must ask yourself is:

does a person/situation contribute to your life?

Do they fuel your personal development/spiritual growth or do they inhibit it?

A toxic situation or person robs you of your time energy/vitality, peace, self-esteem, sanity, strength, love, etc.

Time and distance enlighten you about the toxicity of the situation or person.

You can see the toxic web that you were entangled in.

The truth emancipates you.

Now I am free from that highly toxic person and the toxic energy he secretly brought into my life.

I wasn’t conscious of the toxic situation that he forced me into until much later. His toxic energy and behaviour were poisoning me.

At the time, I didn’t know.

I was asleep.

My intuition kept telling me something was wrong so I finally listened and it led me to the truth.

{I am so grateful that I listened to my inner wisdom}.

When the truth came to light, everything changed and I empowered myself.

As soon as I ripped his mask off and saw him for who he was {a narcissist, traitor/serial cheater, pathological liar & energy thief/psychic vampireamongst other things},

I ran as fast as I could}.

I am focused on detoxing further and healing.

I have to keep the lessons present so that the next time toxicity enters into my life, I detox it with conviction.

Meanwhile, I am singing freedom to myself…

FREEDOM! ’90 LYRICS

[Chorus]
I won’t let you down
I will not give you up

Gotta have some faith in the sound
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got
I won’t let you down
So please don’t give me up
Because I would really, really love to stick around

[Verse 1]
Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn’t know what I wanted to be
I was every little hungry schoolgirl’s pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me

To win the race, a prettier face
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV
But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I’m gonna get me some happy

[Pre-Chorus]
I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I told you so
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone else I’ve got to be
Take back your picture in a frame

Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Verse 2]
Heaven knows we sure had some fun, boy
What a kick, just a buddy and me
We had every big-shot goodtime band on the run, boy
We were living in a fantasy

We won the race, got out of the place
Went back home, got a brand new face for the boys on MTV

But today the way I play the game has got to change oh yeah
Now I’m gonna get myself happy

[Pre-Chorus]
I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I stopped the show
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don’t think that I’ll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Bridge]
Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell

When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well

Posing for another picture
Everybody’s got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were built to last

That’s what you get
I say that’s what you get
That’s what you get for changing your mind

And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

[Chorus]
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
I will not give you up, freedom
Gotta have some faith in the sound
You got to give what you take
It’s the one good thing that I’ve got, freedom
I won’t let you down, freedom
So please don’t give me up, freedom
Cause I would really, really love to stick around

[Outro]
I’ll hold on to my freedom
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it’s got to be
Lose the face now
I’ve got to live.”

Lyrics

“Yo estaba bien
Por un tiempo
Volviendo a sonreir
Luego anoche te vi
Tu mano me toco
Y el saludo de tu voz
Te hable muy bien y tu sin saber
Que he estado

Llorando por tu amor
Llorando por tu amor

Luego de tu adios
Senti todo mi dolor
Sola y llorando
Llorando
Llorando
Llorando

No es facil de entender
Que al verte otra vez
Yo estoy llorando

Yo que pense
Que te olvide
Pero es verdad es la verdad
Que te quiero mas
Mucho mas que ayer
Dime tu que puedo hacer

No me quieres ya
Y siempre estare

Llorando por tu amor
Llorando por tu amor

Tu amor se llevo
Todo mi corazon
Y quedo llorando
Llorando
Llorando
Llorando

Por tu amor.”

Reflection for today…Time To Live…-Jim Morrison

17 Apr

“Time to live, time to lie, time to laugh, and time to die.

Take it easy baby.

Take it as it comes.”

Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison Light

This Jim Morrison reflection embodies the carpe diem/seize the day spirit. He reminds us to be more fluid and take experiences in our lives as they come. He observes that we are living life too fast and we must live at a slower pace.

It reminds me of what is going on with the pandemic. This quarantine has forced us all to reflect, meditate on our lives and slow down. Life has a different taste when we are not rushing all of the time.

Hopefully, when this is over, you can “specialize in having fun.”

It is time to live…

TAKE IT AS IT COMES LYRICS

[Chorus]
Takes it easy, baby
Take it as it comes
Don’t move too fast
And you want your love to last

Oh, you’ve been moving much too fast

[Verse 2]
Time to walk
Time to run
Time to aim your arrows
At the sun

[Chorus]
Takes it easy, baby
Take it as it comes
Don’t move too fast
And you want your love to last

Oh, you’ve been moving much too fast

[Verse 3]
Go real slow
You like it more and more
Take it as it comes
Specialize in having fun

[Chorus]
Takes it easy, baby
Take it as it comes
Don’t move too fast
And you want your love to last

Oh, you’ve been moving much too fast

Stream of Consciousness Reflections…The Spiritual Lessons of The Pandemic…

16 Apr

Aloha dear friends/readers.

How is life treating you? I pray well.

I started this blog many years ago to reflect on life,  ideas, theories, philosophies, truths, emotions, people, the world, the inner workings of my mind, etc.

Perhaps it was also an attempt to access the locked room in my mind- my subconscious.

I have always lived a life of quiet reflection to connect more deeply with my spirituality and my self. Now I think it is the quintessential time for all of us to reflect on the life we were living and how we are living now. This pandemic and quarantine have taught us all so much. {I am aware that our lessons are tailored to each of us}.

What is still important? What remnants of the past carry over to the present? Are your ethics and priorities the same? Do you have more clarity now? Will the changes in ourselves, in others and our lives be sustainable? We will go back to how we were when this over? Hopefully, we are fluid like the ebbs and flows of the ocean.

I am reflecting on what I am supposed to learn and the hidden lessons in the chaos.

Compassion is still the highest form of love because it is spiritual love.

Altruism exists– even though the critics/haters disagree. {Unfortunately, selfishness also exists}.

We are all interconnected. We all affect each other and in some cases, we all need each other. {Perhaps now we can see the invisible threads that unite us. The ego always works to disconnect us from each other through the illusion of seperation}. In essence, we are all waves in the same ocean of humanity.

Courage can be born out of necessity.

Health is wealth.

Reflection/inner introspection is a vital and meditative activity for your soul and mind.

Fear can seduce us into paralysis if we let it.

Creative problem-solving is vital in life.

We all need to take care of our mental health {as well as our physical health}- especially now. Depression and anxiety can slowly invite its way into our lives if we are not mindful.

People mean more to us than we realized- especially loved ones or family.

Reflection for today… Love is a Spiritual Light -Charles Bukowski & Common

13 Mar

“I look at her and Light goes all through me.”

-Charles Bukowski

Erykah Badu & Common Looking At Each Other

Lovers/Best Friends are a Spiritual Reflection of each other…

*

Love is an expansion of spirit.

It is a soulful ascension and profound healing.

It is a spiritual light that fuels spiritual growth.

I love how Common expresses his deep love, loyalty and respect for Erykah Badu.

He sees her as his queen, best friend and equal.

Erykah is his “reflection in light.”

This song is essentially his love letter to her.

“At times when I’m lost I try to find you”…

*

The song illustrates not only the romantic side of love but also the realistic side.

Love is full of challenges.

Regardless, if love is present then it can give you the strength to face those challenges together.

THE LIGHT LYRICS

[Produced by J Dilla]

[Intro]
Yeah, doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-d-doo, diggy-doo, yo

[Hook]
There are times
When you’ll need someone
I will be by your side
There is a light that shines
Special for you and me

[Verse 1]
I never knew a luh, luh-luh, a love like this
Gotta be somethin’ for me to write this
Queen, I ain’t seen you in a minute
Wrote this letter, and finally decide to send it
Signed, sealed, delivered, for us to grow together
Love has no limit, let’s spend it slow forever
I know your heart is weathered by what studs did to you
I ain’t gon’ assault them, ‘cause I probably did it too

Because of you, feelings I handle with care
Some n*ggas recognize the light
But they can’t handle the glare
You know I ain’t the type to walk around with matchin’ shirts
If relationship is effort I will match your work
I want to be the one to make you happiest
And hurt you the most

They say the end is near, it’s important that we close
To the most high
Regardless of what happen, on Him let’s rely

[Hook]
There are times
When you’ll need someone
I will be by your side
There is a light that shines
Special for you and me

[Verse 2]
It’s important we communicate
And tune the fate of this union to the right pitch
I never call you my bitch or even my boo
There’s so much in a name and so much more in you

Few understand the union of woman and man
And sex and a tingle is where they assume that it land
But that’s fly by night, for you in the sky I write
For in these cold Chi night’s moon, you my light
If Heaven had a height, you would be that tall
Ghetto to coffee shop, through you I see that all
Let’s stick to understandin’ and we won’t fall
For better or worse times, I hope to me you call
So I pray every day more than anything
Friends we’ll stay as we begin to lay
This foundation for a family, love ain’t simple
Why can’t it be anything worth havin’ you work at annually?
Granted we known each other for some time
It don’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine

[Hook]
There are times
When you’ll need someone
I will be by your side
There is a light that shines
Special for you and me

[Verse 3]
It’s kind of fresh you listen to more than hip-hop
And I can catch you in the mix from beauty to thrift shop
Plus you shit pop when it’s time to
Thinkin’ you fresh, suggestin’ beats I should rhyme to
At times when I’m lost I try to find you
You know to give me space when it’s time to
My heart’s dictionary defines you, it’s love and happiness
Truthfully it’s hard tryin’ to practice abstinence
The time we committed love, it was real good
Had to be for me to arrive and it still feel good

I know the sex ain’t gon’ keep you
But as my equal, it’s how I must treat you
As my reflection in light I’ma lead you
And whatever’s right I’ma feed you
Digga-da, digga-da, digga-da, digga-digga-da-da
Yo, I tell you the rest when I see you; peace!

[Hook]
There are times
When you’ll need someone
I will be by your side
There is a light that shines
Special for you and me

[Outro]
I’ll take my chances
Before they pass
Pass me by, oh, darling
You need to look at the other side
You’ll agree

Reflection for Today…Discarded Lovers Deserve A Second Chance- Mae West

“All discarded lovers should be given a second chance,

Queen of The South James GueroQueen of The South You're The Judas

In the television series Queen of The South, Teresa’s first love Guero is fighting with James {Teresa’s new potential love}. They are fighting over which man is worthy of Teresa’s love. Both James and Guero desperately want to be by her side.

This reflection warms my heart. I agree that all discarded lovers should be given another chance. The key is that the second chance is with someone else. There is an element of poetic justice in the reflection.

Reflection for today…A Volcanic Love -Richard Burton

11 Jan
Richard Burton Elizabeth Taylor quote

Isn’t it lovely how she is cutting his hair?

This reflection is lovely to me. Despite their two divorces, Richard and Elizabeth loved each other. Unfortunately, their love was not able to withstand the storms of life. They still had unwavering mutual respect for each other.

Another thing that strikes me is how eloquent Richard Burton is. I am enamoured with his writing and it reminds me of my friend Olly’s writing. What an ode he wrote to his beloved Elizabeth!

You can only hope that someone writes that way about you one day…

Reflection for today…Never The Same Love Twice -F. Scott Fitzgerald

10 Jan

Isn’t it comforting to know that someone will never find the pure love that you gave them {no matter who they are with}? This reflection is so empowering to me. I feel that it highlights the importance of self-love and valuing oneself.

What you offer another in the realm of love is sacred.

If someone doesn’t value or appreciate your love then they are not the person for you. You will only suffer by their side and become embittered. You will only be taken for granted. You will not grow spiritually/evolve or live your potential. You won’t be happy or loved.

DON’T TAKE YOUR LOVE AWAY FROM ME LYRICS

I am looking for an inspiration
And I think I found it in your heart
It’s the kind of thing you get when you’re not looking
It’s the kind of thing you had from the start
Put me on a ship that is sinking
On a voyage to an untamed land
Take away the freedoms I wanted
I understand
Please, don’t take your love away from me
Don’t take your love away from me
Please don’t take your love away from me
Please don’t take your love from me
Please don’t take your love from me
Put me inside flesh that is dying
A ghost that wanders without rest
Buried by desires and weakness
I understand
Please, don’t take your love away from me
Don’t take your love away from me
Please don’t take your love from me
Please don’t take your love from me
Hmmmmmm
Hmmmmmm

Reflection for today…The Karma Police -Buddha & Radiohead

9 Jan

“Don’t waste your time on revenge.

Those who hurt you

will eventually face their own karma.”

-Buddha

*

When someone has hurt you, betrayed you or done you wrong, revenge can be seductive.

I have never been in favour of revenge. I believe it would just lead to an endless cycle of further suffering, bitterness and future painful karma.

I prefer “living well as the best revenge” philosophy.

I have been reflecting on revenge because of recent events.

What I wonder is why aren’t those individuals that hurt us, betray us and do us wrong afraid of the karma police?

But we’re still on the payroll

For a minute there

Karma Police Department

“Thom Yorke {singer in Radiohead}: Karma is important. The idea that something like karma exists makes me happy. It makes me smile. Karma Police is dedicated to everyone who works for a big firm. It’s a song against bosses.”

Karma Police We Saw That

“Ed O’Brien: When someone in the band behaved like an a–hole, one of the others always said: ‘The Karma Police is gonna get you.’ I suppose it’s all rubbish that your destiny depends on your deeds in a previous life, but you have to trust on something.”

Karma Police This Is What You Get

“It was a band catch phrase for a while on tour – whenever someone was behaving in a particular s—ty way, we’d say, ‘The karma police will catch up with him sooner or later’,” guitarist Jonny Greenwood told Melody Maker. “You have to rely on something like that, even though we’re probably just kidding ourselves. But it’s not a revenge thing, just about being happy with your own behaviour.”

Reflection for today…Closing Doors -Paulo Coelho

7 Jan

“Close some doors.

Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance,

but simply because they no longer lead somewhere.

-Paulo Coelho

Even though it may be painful to close a door, it might be the best thing for you…

*

It can be so painful to close a door.

It can be even more painful to try to keep a door open that isn’t meant for you.

I used to have such difficulty in closing doors. It used to hurt so much because I struggle with endings and the melancholy they bring. I think I am getting a little stronger spiritually and emotionally. I recently closed a door and blocked some phone numbers {which is completely out of my character}.

Perhaps that is a sign of maturity and spiritual growth?

Regardless of what this change signifies, it feels right.

“Your skull froze little lives
In shadows where you hide
A life that was designed
You’ve been cheated, oh so blind
You laid it on the line
These twisted words of time
And how your spirit shines
I wish that you were mine[Chorus: Ian Astbury]
Yeah, lately
I know that I’ve been crawling
I know that I’ve been falling
Into your dream[Verse 2: Ian Astbury]
Imagine no more tears
Dissolving all your fears

Yeah, lately
I know that I’ve been crawling
I know that I’ve been falling

You saw your tears in mine
We watched it burn together
I saw my fears in your eyes
You saw your fear in mine
We watched it burn together

Reflection for today…Respect Yourself -Don Miguel Ruiz & Björk

5 Jan

“Everyone has a price, and life respects that price.

But that price is not measured in dollars or in gold;

It is measured in love.

More, than that, it is measured in self-love.

How much you love yourself–that is your price–

and life respects the price.

When you love yourself, your price is very high,

which means your tolerance for self-abuse is very low.

It’s very low because you respect yourself.”

Don Miguel Ruiz, Wisdom From The Mastery of Love

When I was a child my mother taught me to respect people. What she didn’t tell me is that you need to have boundaries so that people will respect you. Not only do you have to have boundaries but you have to strictly enforce them as well.

I used to be so afraid of confrontations and of speaking up. I would always worry that I might upset, hurt or offend someone. To an extent, I was also afraid of being disliked and rejected. Since I did not like myself, I was so hungry for other people’s approval {even though I did not consciously know it at the time}.

The price of this silence was putting up with some disrespect. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t regret it because I deeply regret it. I also have to acknowledge that without these experiences, then I would not have come to these realizations.

They are lessons that I am still learning and life only keeps offering you more tests.

Being “nice” is an invitation for people to test your boundaries. These days, I would much rather have respect than just be a “nice” person. It seems like a universal law that unless you respect yourself then no one truly will.

Another thing that I learned is that some people do not deserve your respect or your presence in their lives. Please let me clarify what I mean. Everyone deserves basic respect as human beings. The respect that I am speaking about is the respect that people earn through their friendship, loyalty and compassion. Some people just do not deserve that level of respect from you. Some people do not deserve your friendship, loyalty and compassion.

Trust and respect need to be earned for them to hold any gravitas/weight.

Lyrics

Army of Me

Björk

[Verse 1]
“Stand up
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Verse 2]
You’re alright
There’s nothing wrong
Self-sufficience, please!
And get to work

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me

[Verse 3]
You’re on your own now
We won’t save you
Your rescue squad
Is too exhausted

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me

[Chorus]
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me, army of me.”

Stream of Consciousness Reflections…Spiritual Nakedness

3 Jan

How do you know if someone is enamoured with your soul- your essence?

How can you get to a place where you can drop all masks/pretenses?

How to get to a place of vulnerability- spiritual nakedness that is beyond sex/sexuality, ego/narcissism and identity?

Where is the path to get there?

Will you walk it even if you find it?

{It takes a great deal of courage and maturity to walk this path}.

How does one get to that place of spiritual humility?

Reflection for today…Critical Reading -Henry David Thoreau & Tupac Shakur

13 Sep

* Editor’s Note: Today {September 13th, 1996} marks the 23rd anniversary of Tupac’s tragic death at the age of 25.

Rest in Peace Tupac.

We will continue to celebrate your life and your legacy.

{Things are not the same without you…}

https://2paclegacy.net/today-marks-23-years-since-tupac-was-killed/

In this reflection, I wanted to explore the intellectual and poetic side of Tupac that is rarely discussed {the same happens with Jim Morrison the lead singer of The Doors}.

I hope to explore other artist’s reading lists in future reflections.

*

“Readers are plentiful;

thinkers are rare.”
Henry David Thoreau

*

Tupac Shakur was always hungry for knowledge.

He was a voracious reader and student of life. His passion for learning and social justice advocacy was a part of his essence.

Tupac’s intellectual power came from a vast knowledge of eclectic topics. He loved to explore esoteric, the metaphysical and philosophical topics. This study became the foundation for his song lyrics and life philosophy.

His mother, Afeni Shakur, had already instilled in him a revolutionary education as she was a member of The Black Panthers. She passed on her wisdom and Tupac continued to polish the jewels.

Tupac was truly an autodidact {a self-taught person}. He would educate others through his song lyrics.

Tupac Shakur Smiling

“Before his tragic death at age of 25, Tupac rapped about poverty, violence in the black community, police brutality, black empowerment, political strategy and spirituality.” https://www.blackfaves.com/story/11-books-tupac-shakurs-bookshelf-still-relevant-today/

In this short video, Tupac’s first manager Leila Steinberg discusses Tupac’s love of literature and critical thinking.

Tupac Shakur and Leila Steinberg

Leila Steinberg is an artist and community organizer who began working with youth twenty years ago in the San Francisco Bay area. As the daughter of a criminal defence attorney, she grew up surrounded by the workings of the justice system and took a front row seat at the personal tragedies and socio-economic pressures that turn so many at-risk youths into hardened felons. Steinberg helps them connect with their hearts and turn anger and pain into creativity.
AIM promotes artistic expression as a way to handle problems as opposed to choosing violence, drugs or other forms of escape. As the program facilitator, Steinberg sees confronting pain as the best way to move past it. She believes self-awareness is a key to making better choices.

Steinberg is committed to helping people who fall through the cracks of society. In 1995 she began a series of specialized programs for youth within the juvenile justice system and those residing in residential treatment facilities. As hip-hop music became the expression of today’s youth, Steinberg began training artists to develop voices powerful enough to reach a generation. While conducting poetry workshops in Northern California, she met Tupac Shakur and he became a regular participant in her class. They shared a vision of developing a space where each artist in attendance is encouraged, inspired and motivated to address social change in their work. Tupac referred to Leila as the “bow” and himself as the “arrow.” –http://www.pinlight.com/leila.htm

This clip is from the movie Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel.

It is said to be a “documentary examining the politics, music and life of Tupac Shakur.”

This is the description from the Youtube video…

This is a list of books read by Tupac during his lifetime including while he was at the Baltimore School of Arts and in prison. They are presented in no particular order. The topics include Black history, the afterlife, religion including Zen, war, women’s liberation, music, and poetry. Reading these books, it is clear how they moulded Tupac’s thinking and language. This is a handy list of good reading material if you ever find yourself locked up.”

Reflection for today…Empowerment Through Beauty -Salma Hayek

7 Aug

“People often say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder,

and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is

realizing that you are the beholder.”

Salma Hayek

Salma-hayek.w330.h330

I love Salma Hayek’s empowering quote.

According to Salma’s perspective, only you define beauty because you are the beholder. People let others define beauty for them- whether it is the media and other people. It is so refreshing and empowering to realize that you are the beholder.

Reflection for today…Radiate Boundless Love -Buddha & Richard Ashcroft

6 Jan

“Radiate boundless love towards the entire world

— above, below, and across

— unhindered, without ill will, without enmity.”

– The Buddha

(From the Metta Sutta)

richard ashcroft leave me high

*

Please enjoy Leave Me High by Richard Ashcroft…

Richard Ashcroft’s angelic voice feels like such a healing vibration. I truly feel his soul radiating boundless love. Listening to the beauty of this song brings me to the point of tears. Richard is indeed blessed with such a gift and talent. Through his art, he is able to contribute to the healing of the world {like other artists}.

In Leave Me High, Richard says that “no love can fulfill like this love that you give.” He isn’t specifically talking about a lover in a typical romantic sense {although he could be}. Another possibility is that he is referencing self-love; where no one else can complete you or fulfill you like your own love can.

The idea of self-love as a source of spiritual strength and healing is discussed at length in the mastery of love by Don Miguel Ruiz. Self-love is the key to happiness and peace in our relationships with others and ourselves. For Don Miguel Ruiz, self-love is non-negotiable because it is so married to respect. It is the key ingredient for a spiritually and emotionally fulfilled life.

Humans hunt for love. We feel that we need that love because we believe we don’t have love, because we don’t love ourselves. We hunt for love in other humans just like us, expecting to get love from them when these humans are in the same condition as we are. They don’t love themselves either, so how much love can we get from them? We merely create a bigger need that isn’t real; we keep hunting and hunting, but in the wrong place, because other humans don’t have the love we need.”

I suspect that Richard is referring to God or a universal/higher power where no one can fulfill him like this divine love does. He sings, …”leave me high, leave me looking over mountains in the heavens…”. The song has a spiritual vibe to me and love is equated with ascension and enlightenment, “your love take me higher, bring me light, everything.”

The main thesis to me is “take those chains from your heart and soul.” In essence, Richard is speaking about emancipation but from what? I think the chains are the walls that we keep to protect our hearts.  We can become imprisoned by all the ways that we try to protect ourselves from pain, loss/grief, suffering and betrayal. By wearing armour on our hearts and souls, we risk missing out on real intimacy, love and healing. It is much wiser to listen to Richard and “take those chains from your heart and soul…”

*

What is your interpretation of this song?

I am by no means right or wrong.

I just thought it would be fun to try to interpret it.

Have you read the mastery of love?

Lyrics

“Leave me high
Leave me looking
Leave me low
Leave me warm
No love can fulfill
Like this love that you give
Leave me high
Leave me looking
Over mountains in the heavens
No love can fulfill
Like this love that you give

Hello, hello, hello, hello
Yeah, hello, hello, hello, hello

Wasted moments come together
Like a boat on a stream
Your love take me higher
Bring me light, everything
Oh take those chains from within my soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on

Hello, hello, hello, hello

Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Like a slow train moving my soul on
Through the mountains over heavens
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Yeah like a slow train
Take those chains from your heart and soul
Through the mountains over heavens
Through the mountains over heavens
Leave me high
Leave me looking.”

Reflection for today…I Against I -The Bhagavad Gita & Mos Def

2 Jan

“He who has conquered himself by the Self,

he is a friend of himself;

but he whose self is unconquered,

his self acts as his own enemy like an external foe.”
Bhagavad-Gita, VI.6

*

You can be your best friend or your own worst enemy. It really is your choice. Sadly, most people are their own worst enemies. They consciously or unconsciously engage in self-sabotage/self-destructive behaviour.

This is the shadow side that Carl Jung talks about. {I will be discussing this fascinating concept in future posts}.

The question is: how to emancipate yourself from your self-destructive prison?

How do you stop fighting yourself?

“I-ya, I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind,

two of a kind but one won’t survive,

my images reflect in the enemies eye, and his images reflect in mine the same time,

I-ya, I-ya, I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind, two of a kind but one won’t survive,

Right here is where the end gon’ start at, conflict, contact ‘n’ combat,

fighters stand where the land is marked at, settle the dispute about who the livest, 3 word answer, Whoever survive this, only one of us can ride forever, so you and I can’t ride together, can’t live or cant die together, all we can do is collide together, so I skillfully apply the pressure, won’t stop until I’m forever… one! A doorstep where death never come, spread across time til my time never done, and I’m never done, walk tall, why ever run? when they move if I ever come? bad man never fret the war, tell’em come general we have the stock, the mad fire burn I-ya,

I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind, two of a kind but one won’t survive, my images reflect in the enemies eye, and his images reflect in mine the same time, I-ya, I-ya,

I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind, two of a kind but one won’t survive, survive (x16)

Reign supreme in your U-N-I, V-E-R-S-E with the sharpness, narrow row building no space for partners, no space for drivers, no space for walkers, no space regardless, your on my path then get off it, hardheaded and unresponsive, get they lives put on target with harshness, come with the canons sparkin’ they darken, who am i? one man squadron, Ma stir the fire this time that’d snatch your tomorrow, the thousand-yard spear that’ll pierce through your armour, you can get it on right now if you want to, but when ya front 9 get marched through, I warned you, You know who forever belong to,

I-ya, I-ya I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind, two of a kind but one won’t survive, my images reflect in the enemies eye, and his images reflect in mine the same time, I-ya, I-ya, I against I, flesh of my flesh, and mind of my mind, two of a kind but one won’t survive, my images reflect in the enemies eye, and his images reflect in mine, survive survive (x16).”

We all know people that focus on the problems rather than the solutions.

With reflection, we can see how we fit in those self-destructive psychological patterns. Then we can focus on creative problem-solving and not ruminating on the problem/s. We can emancipate ourselves from those mental cul-de-sacs.

Happy New Year.

Reflection for today…No Truth Can Cure Grief -Haruki Murakami

31 May

“No truth can cure the sorrow we feel from losing a loved one.

No truth, no sincerity, no strength, no kindness can cure that sorrow.

In this short video clip, Eric Clapton discusses Jim Hendrix’s death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j082opb4AZo

http://youtu.be/j082opb4AZo

Eric Clapton about Jimi Hendrix death

It is painfully obvious that Eric is deeply mourning Jimi. Their friendship had a sacred place in his life. It was a friendship based on mutual respect and admiration. It was a friendship of equals.

Jimi Hendrix & Eric Clapton in 1967

Eric is overcome with a tidal wave of melancholy while speaking about Jimi. A sense of anger is also present in his voice. Perhaps it is the sense of hopelessness over what happened. The sad truth is that no matter how much we love someone, we cannot save them from anything- especially from death.

Death tries to steal our greatest loves from us.

Death is the greatest thief.

*

Eric speaks about the feelings of abandonment he felt when Jimi died, “a lonely feeling to be left alone.” This comment reminds me of how death affects the loved ones left behind. Somehow they have to be resilient in order to continue on with their lives despite their pain and grief. The hole in one’s heart is left there forever. Time is irrelevant in grief. I really admire people for their strength in being able to live their lives despite their grief, suffering and losses. They truly have my utmost respect.

*

Eric’s story about the birthday gift he bought for Jimi was so heartfelt. He bought him a left-handed Fender stratocaster guitar but due to circumstances, he was unable to give it to him that night. Unfortunately, he was never able to give it Jimi because he died. Eric notes, “The next day, wack, he was gone and I was left with that left-handed stratocaster.” When he looks at the interviewer it looks like he is holding back tears. You can see the pain in his eyes- in his soul.

It is so tragic when loved ones are taken from us. I recently lost someone and no matter how many times it has happened, you are never ready for it. You are always left broken, bloody, bruised, raw and spiritually naked. Grieving takes a lot out of you- especially if you are a sensitive soul like myself. This is the reason why I have been away so long from this blog. I needed some time to reflect and grieve on my own. Hopefully I can reflect with you all now. If you are still here, thank you for still being here. Thank you for reading.

Reflection for today…The Beauty of Living & Dying -Brandon Lee

1 Jan

Hello everyone. I thought I would start this year’s blog posts with a memento mori reflection on death and life. Since it is impossible to divorce death from life, we can use reflective energy to focus on how we want to live.

The beauty that Brandon Lee speaks with is eloquent, timeless and utterly peaceful. I am sure most of you know that Brandon was tragically killed while filming The Crow in 1993. This video clip was shot a little while before he died.

{I hope to do a post on The Crow and possibly Brandon Lee in the future}.

Let’s reflect on life and death with the same peace and gratitude that Brandon exudes.

“Because we do not know when we will die,

we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well

and yet everything happens only a certain number of times and a very small number, really.

How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood?

An afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it. Perhaps four, five times more. Perhaps not even that.

How many more times will you watch the full moon rise?

Perhaps twenty and yet it all seems limitless.”

-From the book The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles

This quote is on Brandon’s Tombstone.
Brandon is buried next to his father Bruce Lee in the Lake View Cemetary in Seattle, Washington.

Here is a closer look…

Brandon loved this quote so much that he had chosen it for his wedding invitations.

He was to be married to his soul mate Eliza Hutton one week after he finished filming The Crow on April 17th, 1993. Brandon tragically died on March 31st, 1993.

The Crow is dedicated to Brandon and Eliza.

Street Spirit (Fade Out)

“Rows of houses all bearing down on me I can feel their blue hands touching me All these things into position All these things we’ll one day swallow whole And fade out again and fade out

This machine will not communicate These thoughts and the strain I am under Be a world child, form a circle Before we all go under And fade out again and fade out again

Cracked eggs, dead birds Scream as they fight for life I can feel death, can see it’s beady eyes All these things into position All these things we’ll one day swallow whole And fade out again and fade out again

Immerse your soul in love Immerse your soul in love.”

SONG INFORMATION

Released: March 1995 Found on: The Bends & Street Spirit single. Acoustic version found on Fake Plastic Trees CD2.

This song was written in 1993, around the same time as “My Iron Lung.” “Creep” is Radiohead’s American hit, this is the British equivalent. Noted by singer-songwriter and guitarist Thom Yorke as “one of [the band’s] saddest songs” and describing it as “the dark tunnel without the light at the end,” “Street Spirit” was released as the band’s ninth single and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart, the highest chart position the band achieved until “Paranoid Android” from OK Computer, which reached number three in 1997.

Yorke has suggested that the song was inspired by the 1991 novel The Famished Road, written by Ben Okri, and that its music was inspired by R.E.M. The track is built around a soft melody in A minor with an arpeggio (broken chord) guitar part.

Thom: “Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack…

Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack.

I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song.”

Reflection for today…The Storm Is Inside Of You -Haruki Murakami

3 Nov

Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn’t something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you.

This storm is you. Something inside of you.

So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn’t get in, and walk through it, step by step. There’s no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That’s the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine.

And you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be, make no mistake about it: it will cut through flesh like a thousand razor blades. People will bleed there, and you will bleed too. Hot, red blood. You’ll catch that blood in your hands, your own blood and the blood of others.

And once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain.

When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in.

That’s what this storm’s all about.”

Isn’t Haruki Murakami so wise?

Doesn’t he write so beautifully?

Is the storm an emotional, psychological or spiritual storm?

{I think it is all of the above}.

Could a storm be a real mental illness or physical illness?

{I think so- especially with mental illness because it is internal just like Murakami’s metaphorical storm}.

Is life just a pause between each storm?

Or is life the storm itself?

{One could come to that conclusion because life involves constant change}.

Is the purpose of the storm to make us grow, learn, heal and/or evolve?

Do we need the chaos and suffering of the storm so that we can learn, grow/evolve and heal?

I like that he suggests that even though we will get hurt we will also heal.

We are inherently resilient.

He also stresses the idea of metamorphosis.

Once we come out of the storm we are changed.

Could this be spiritual/emotional/psychological alchemy?

{I would love to hear your thoughts}.

Reflection for today…The Ocean of Consciousness -Rumi…

18 Oct

Rumi You Are The Ocean In An Entire Drop

I remember reading some Buddhist teachings many moons ago that spoke about the ocean of consciousness.

It spoke about each of us being a wave in the ocean.

We think that we are completely independent; that we are a single wave because of the illusion of our ego.

Our ego clouds and distorts our perception creating a false sense of self.

It is complicated as in Western society there is so much focus on the self: self-improvement, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-doubt, etc.

The truth is that while it may seem that we are individual waves,

we are actually part of the ocean; the ocean of humanity.

*

I really cannot understand how some people can have no compassion for each other.

At the root of this poverty of the spirit is a lack of compassion for the self, selfishness and an overindulgence of the ego.

{One cannot offer compassion if you have no compassion for yourself}.

As I said to my friend, if we don’t help each other then we will all sink.

I know that we all have our individual problems but if we just focus on them, then we cannot get out of our heads and the prison of selfishness.

There is a delicate balance between having compassion and helping others with helping yourself and protecting yourself from harm. Boundaries are necessary.

I always struggle with how to have compassion while not losing myself.

The sad truth is that many people mistake kindness for weakness.

The truth is that it takes great strength to be compassionate in this world.

It takes great spiritual strength to open your heart and mind to offer your compassion.

*

When the triple disasters were taking place in Japan in 2011, I was horrified. I was watching the news on the internet. I constantly watched BBC, CBC and Al Jazeera with tears in my eyes.

I could not help crying as I watched the news.

It hurt my heart and soul to witness such suffering.

I could not believe that on top of the tsunami and the earthquake there was a nuclear situation as well. As I thought of Fukushima, I was reminded of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. I was very concerned and afraid for Japan. I still am.

While I had no family, friends or loved ones in Japan, I felt deep compassion for the Japanese.

It didn’t matter in the least if I didn’t know a single soul in Japan.

We are all interconnected and if Japan was suffering and grieving then we all were.

I still think of Japan and how the triple disasters affected and affect people today- especially the effects of nuclear contamination/radiation.

The reason that I share this is because I had an epiphany then.

My good friend and I were having coffee one day {during the disasters in 2011}.

I was telling him about what was happening in Japan.

He stopped me in the middle of my sentence and said very coldly, “you know what…I just don’t care.”

That is when I realized that something inside of him died.

To be honest, I was very disturbed by his comment and his attitude.

Upon deep reflection, I felt sadness and compassion for him.

He had just gone through a very painful and dark time with the illness of his mother. I know that this experience had a very damaging effect on him.

I think he was most likely spiritually disconnected and emotionally numb at that point.

He probably had nothing left to give as he was in desperate need of healing.

*

Compassion is the greatest gift you can offer someone.

Compassion is what makes us truly human.

Our humanity is rooted in compassion.

*Remember that we are all in this life together.

We all depend on each other.

We are all interdependent as waves in the ocean of humanity.

To learn more about Azam Ali, Loga Ramin Torkian and Niyaz…

http://www.niyazmusic.com/

Here is a brief description that I copied and pasted from their biography.

From this link: http://www.niyazmusic.com/#!/biography/

Niyaz, which means ‘yearning’ in Persian and Urdu, was formed in 2005 by Azam Ali, multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian and two-time Grammy nominated producer and electronic musician Carmen Rizzo.

The band borrows from an historic lineage of Middle Eastern poets setting verse to music, perhaps most famously known today through the work of the 13th century Persian poet Rumi and the endless barrage of quotes attributed to him on Twitter and Facebook.

While the immediate goal of Niyaz was to explore the music and identity of Iranians living in exile and struggling to maintain their cultural identity in the modern world on their first two acclaimed records, Niyaz and Nine Heavens, the band has expanded that theme with Sumud.”

*

Azam Ali is the singer with the heavenly voice in Niyaz.

Azam AliHer voice is truly “otherworldly” and hauntingly beautiful.

Azim Ali Otherworldly

She has also been a part of another band named VAS. Their albums include: Sunyata (1997), Offerings (1998), In the Garden of Souls (2000) and Feast of Silence (2004).

Azam has released seven albums between Niyaz and VAS.

Niyaz’s albums include: Niyaz (2005), Nine Heavens (2008) and Sumud (2012).

She has also released four solo albums: Portals of Grace (2002), Elysium for the Brave (2006), From Night to the Edge of Day (2011) and Lamentation of Swans- A Journey Towards Silence (2013).

Azam has also been involved in movie soundtracks (the movie 300) and video game soundtracks.

Reflection for today…Expanded Consciousness & Bliss -David Lynch

2 Aug

We all want expanded consciousness and bliss.

It’s a natural, human desire.

And a lot of people look for it in drugs.

But the problem is that the body, the physiology, takes a hard hit on drugs.

Drugs injure the nervous system, so they just make it harder to get those experiences on your own.
I have smoked marijuana, but I no longer do.

I went to art school in the 1960s, so you can imagine what was going on. Yet my friends were the ones who said, “No, no, no, David, don’t you take those drugs.” I was pretty lucky.

Besides, far more profound experiences are available naturally.

When your consciousness starts expanding, those experiences are there.

All those things can be seen.

It’s just a matter of expanding that ball of consciousness.

And the ball of consciousness can expand to be infinite and unbounded.

It’s totality. You can have totality.

So all those experiences are there for you, without the side effects of drugs.”

“[Pulse of the people]
[If it feel good to ya]
[It’s okay to smile]
can’t get but so far in this life being selfish.
a free spirit
a giving heart
that’s what wealth is
we rich when we recognize the power that’s within
it’s not all about the money
it’s the time that we spend
it’s the hand that we lend
to a friend when we can
it’s the kind words you gave to that homeless man
without judging that man
it’s the fact that you gave;
and showed compassion ’cause he humbly asked you for change
i know the blessings I receive is not just for me
a shared blessing comes back to you
that’s what I believe
to help someone in need
to throw down some rope
to be a ray of hope
ya know?
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you just gotta be helpful
when life gets stressful
sometimes you gotta help somebody
sometimes you gotta help somebody
what goes around is gonna come back ’round
what goes around is gonna come back ’round
when you help somebody
donate my extra clothes
to a clothing drive.
help the lady cross the street
bring her bags inside.
send a letter to a prisoner to lift his spirit.
be a mentor to a child ’cause it takes a village.
lend a hand, help a brother
that I learned the hard way
all for one
one for all
it got to be the squad way
the early bird get the worm
it’s corny but it’s true
first impressions last forever
careful how you move
first you crawl
then you walk
the 1 before the 2
nothing new under the sun
the golden rule
lazy people work the hardest
that’s my motivation
everything in moderation
even moderation
yo
yo, when you put out your hand,
is it to give or to receive?
see what goes around will come back around
I do believe
that the positive and negative is relative to where you live
not from experience
that’s what we tell the kids
’cause they are the seeds
the stronger the root
the stronger the tree
if we eat from the fruit
the stronger we be
if we do it today
tomorrow we free.”

For the folks back home

Of all these weird creatures
Who lock up their spirits
Drill holes in themselves
And live for their secrets

They’re all uptight

I wish that they’d swoop down in a country lane
Late at night when I’m driving
Take me on board their beautiful ship
Show me the world as I’d love to see it

I’d tell all my friends
But they’d never believe
They’d think that I’d finally lost it completely

I’d show them the stars
And the meaning of life
They’d shut me away
But I’d be all right
All right..

I’m just uptight

Reflection for today…The Power of Compassion -Dalai Lama

15 Apr
“If a person has never encountered love towards himself or herself from any quarter, it is a very sad thing.
But if that person can meet even one person who will show unconditional love– simply acceptance and compassion —
if he knows that he is an object of someone else’s affection and love,
it is bound to have an impact, and this will be appreciated.
Because there is a seed in himself, this act of love will start to catalyse or ripen that seed.”

Reflection for today…Time is of The Essence -Buddha

27 Feb

“The trouble is,

you think you have time.”

-Buddha

*

Buddha’s reflection on time is that it is taken for granted.

Time is of the essence because death is approaching {memento mori}.

Being mindful gives us awareness of how we use our time. Hopefully our time is being used living our potential and awakening spiritually and otherwise.

The key is to live in the present moment {the now} and do your very best.

*

I wonder about Buddhist conceptions of time.

I found an intriguing excerpt on Buddhist notions of time from www.tricycle.com

Daniel Goleman: “What is the Buddhist understanding of Time? How can we relate our sense of the process of time to our experience of the present moment?

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: In Buddhism, the concept of linear time, of time as a kind of container, is not accepted. Time itself, I think, is something quite weak. It depends on some physical basis, some specific thing. Apart from that thing it is difficult to pinpoint—to see time. Time is understood or conceived only in relation to a phenomenon or a process.

DG: Yet the passage of time seems very concrete—the past, the present, aging. The process of time seems very real.

HH: This business of time is a difficult subject. There are several different explanations and theories about time; there is no one explanation in Buddhism. I feel there is a difference between time and the phenomena on which time is projected. Time can be spoken of only in relation to phenomena susceptible to change, which because they are susceptible to change are transitory and impermanent. “Impermanent” means there is a process. If there is no process of change, then one cannot conceive of time in the first place.

The question is whether it is possible to imagine an independent time which is not related to any particulars, any object that goes through change. In relation to such an object, we can talk about the past of that thing, its present state, and its future; but without relation to such particulars, it is very difficult to conceive of an instant of time totally independent of a particular basis.”

This video clip is from The Tudors.

King Henry the eighth reflects on loss.

He asks his beloved friend Charles Brandon

What loss is to man most irrecoverable?

Charles answers virtue and then honour.

Henry says that by his actions man can redeem his virtue.

He may  also find the means to recover his honour as he recovers fortune that has been lost.

Henry answers…

Of all losses time is the most irrecuperable for it can never be redeemed.

This valentines day don’t get seduced by fabricated love and consumerist “romantic” marketing- in other words…fake love.

Remember…

You deserve all of someone’s heart- not just a tattered and bruised corner.

You deserve the universe- not mere crumbs.

You deserve the highest respect, reverence and compassion.

You don’t need to fight to get someone’s attention or love.

If they love you and care about you, they will give it willingly.

There will be no need for convincing.

They will see you and know who you are.

They will accept who you are without question.

They will look for you.

They will find you.

They will call you or write you and not wait for you to chase them.

They will take the initiative and make the effort if they really care.

They will swim shark infested waters- or at least the ocean.

They will climb mountains, slay dragons, go to hell and get out of hell to find you.

They will visit you in the hospital or jail- if they are brave enough they might even help you break out.

They will give you their kidney if necessary.

Remember that love is shown in actions and not hollow words.

Remember that love is loyalty and loyalty is love.

But you know everything that you left behind

And it would have been alright
If you’d gave half of  the praise that you held inside
You thought she’d hang around for the ride

[Chorus]

Coming clean feels so dangerous
Just a little bit would have been enough
But you never said all the words caught in your head

As if your heart was dead
Well now its surely bled and broken up

And it would have been alright
If you’d gave half of the praise that you held inside
You thought she’d hang around for the ride

Reflection for today…Love’s Alchemy -Rumi

6 Feb

“O lovers
Love will lay a carpet
of treasures under your feet.

Musicians
Love will fill
your drums with gold.

Thirsty ones
Love will turn your scorched desert
into a meadow of paradise.

Forsaken ones
Love will open
the doors to the King’s palace.

Alchemists
Love’s alchemy
will reshape gallows into altars.

Sinners
Love will change
your apathy to faith.

Kings of the world
in love’s hands
you will melt like a candle.

To the parched lips of those
who are willing to surrender

Love will bring the wine
that changes darkness into vision,
cruelty into compassion
and dust into precious incense.

Those who think
the heart is only in the chest
take two or three steps
and are content.

The rosary,
the prayer rug and repentance
are paths
that they mistake for the destination.”

I really feel that it complements Rumi’s poem “Love’s Alchemy.”

Isn’t the cello along with Jon Crosby’s soulful singing so hauntingly beautiful?

“Close your eyes
let me touch you now
let me give you something
that is real
close the door
leave your fears behind
let me give you
what you’re giving me
you are the only thing
that makes me want to live at all
when i am with you
there’s no reason to pretend that
when i am with you
i feel flames again
just put me inside you
i would never ever leave
just put me inside you
i would never ever leave you.”

Reflection for today…Tears Speak For Themselves -Paulo Coelho

5 Feb

Tears speak for themselves

by Paulo Coelho on February 2, 2013

Our great goal in life is to love.

The rest is silence.

We need to love. Even when it leads us to the land where the lakes are made of tears, to that secret, mysterious place, the land of tears!

Tears speak for themselves. And when we feel that we have cried all we needed to cry, they still continue to flow. But when we believe that our life is destined to be a long walk through the Vale of Sorrows, the tears suddenly vanish.

Because we managed to keep our heart open, despite the pain.

Because we realised that the person who left us did not take the sun with them or leave darkness in their place. They simply left, and with every farewell comes a hidden hope.

It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”

Paulo Coelho manages to capture the essence of love.

Tears are cathartic.

They help us to cleanse and heal.

Paulo Coelho reminds us of the need to cry in order to heal and open our hearts again.

“Broken bottle won’t hurt me
Nothing worse that I have dreamed
Gun shot in my chest you’ll leave
I can take that you will see
Late at night is when I dream
Horrible things are what I see
Hard for me to believe
I wake up and I won’t freeze
Car crash highway tragedy
Nothing worse than I have dreamed
Loss of my best friend I grieve
I can take that you will see.”

Reflection for today…Strength in Solitude -Paulo Coelho

29 Jan

On solitude

by Paulo Coelho

Capture

“For those who are not frightened by the solitude that reveals all mysteries, everything will have a different taste.

In solitude, they will discover the love that might otherwise arrive unnoticed. In solitude, they will understand and respect the love that left them.

In solitude, they will be able to decide whether it is worth asking that lost love to come back or if they should simply let it go and set off along a new path.

In solitude, they will learn that saying ‘No’ does not always show a lack of generosity and that saying ‘Yes’ is not always a virtue.

And those who are alone at this moment, need never be frightened by the words of the devil: ‘You’re wasting your time.’ Or by the chief demon’s even more potent words: ‘No one cares about you.’

The Divine Energy is listening to us when we speak to other people, but also when we are still and silent and able to accept solitude as a blessing.

And in that moment, Its light illumines everything around us and helps us to see that we are necessary, and that our presence on Earth makes a huge difference to Its work.”

In solitude we can look within and acquire infinite wisdom.

In solitude we can listen to our intuition.

In solitude we can be truly honest with ourselves.

In solitude we can reconnect with ourselves and our spirituality- our center/core.

In solitude we can reflect, grow and heal.

In solitude we can discover who we are.

Songwriters: Mikael Lars Akerfeldt

“In the corner beside my window there hangs a lonely photograph
There is no reason I’d never notice a memory that could hold me back
There is a wound that’s always bleeding
There is a road I’m always walking
And I know you’ll never return to this place
Gone through days without talking

There is a comfort in silence
So used to losing all ambition
Struggling to maintain what’s left
Once undone, there is only smoke burning in my eyes to blind
To cover up what really happened
Force the darkness unto me.”

Learning how to be kind to ourselves is important.

When we look into our own hearts and begin to discover what is confused and what is brilliant, what is bitter and what is sweet, it isn’t just ourselves that we’re discovering.

We’re discovering the universe.

When we discover the buddha that we are, we realize that everything and everyone is Buddha.

We discover that everything is awake, and everyone is awake.

Everything and everyone is precious and whole and good. When we regard thoughts and emotions with humor and openness, that’s how we perceive the universe.”

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself,
but thinking of yourself less.”

The elements of this coin focus your attention on humble thoughts.
In the center on the front is a door.
This door is from the Maisel Synagogue in Prague.
In regards to an arrogant person the Creator says: “I and he cannot dwell together.” The door to the Creator’s house
allows for the humble of spirit to enter. The door itself, represented by the Hebrew letter Dalet, is the property of humility and lowliness.
The letter Dalet is the large letter in the middle of the reverse side of the coin On the front, the phrase “I am but dust and ashes” , from Genesis 18:27, is written in English and Hebrew.
Hebrew – V’anokhi `afar va’efer
The plant below this phrase on either side is the hyssop – the lowly hyssop represents modesty and humility. It never becomes proud because of its numerous useful qualities, but remains humble in appearance and modest in its demands.

On the reverse (“tails”) side, the phrase “Know from whence you came”, is written in English and Hebrew.
This reminds you that once upon a time you were just a small bit of matter, and have no reason to be puffed up with pride.
Hebrew – da may’ayin ba’ta
In the center is the Hebrew letter Dalet, characterizing lowliness, the consciousness of possessing nothing of your own.
“434” is the numerical value of the Hebrew word “Dalet”. There are many meanings associated with this number and Dalet for you to explore if you so chose.

DWENNIMMEN (djwin-knee-mann): “Ram’s horns.”
“West African symbol of strength (in mind, body and soul), humility, wisdom and learning.
The ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble. “

Reflection for today…Pain is Meant To Wake Us Up- Jim Morrison

8 Dec

People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality;

their feelings most of all.

People talk about how great love is, but that’s bullshit.

Love hurts.

Feelings are disturbing.

People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous.

How can they deal with love if they’re afraid to feel?

Pain is meant to wake us up.

People try to hide their pain. But they’re wrong.

Pain is something to carry, like a radio.

You feel your strength in the experience of pain.

It’s all in how you carry it.

That’s what matters. Pain is a feeling.

Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality.

If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality.

You should stand up for your right to feel your pain.”

Reflection for today…The Definition of Genius -I Ching

5 Dec

“Genius is the ability to receive
from the universe.”

—I Ching

The question is…do we have to be humble in order to receive?

Do we have to be silent and go within in?

I suspect compassion, kindness, intuition, mindfulness and gratitude open the doors to receive gifts from the universe.

*

How do we give back to the universe?

Perhaps by living our potential, being compassionate & grateful and by treating others

{and ourselves} with reverence, kindness and love.

Perhaps we have to be as open to giving as we are to receiving.

What do you think?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Reflection for today…Choosing the way we will depart -Paulo Coelho

11 Nov

Choosing the way we will depart.

Choosing the way we will depart

by Paulo Coelho on November 7, 2012

As you probably know, we are all going to die one day.

As we become aware of that, we should surrender to life with much more joy, making things we always postpone, respecting the precious minutes that are passing by and will never come back, disclosing and discovering horizons that can be interesting or disappointing, but deserve at least a little bit of our effort.

It’s normal that we try to avoid death.

It isn’t only normal, it’s the healthiest attitude we can adopt. It is an aberration however to deny it, as the awareness of it lends us much more courage.

If I were to die today, what would I like to do that I haven’t done yet? This is my thought every morning. I learned, along the Saint James Path, that the Angel of Death is my best counsellor.

Yamamoto Tsunetomo says to his disciple: ‘All of us want to live and that is absolutely natural. However, we should learn from childhood on to choose our best way to die.

‘If we don’t do that, we end up spending our days like a dog, only in search of harbour, food and expressing a blind loyalty to his owner in return. That isn’t enough to make our lives have a meaning.’

It is no use in trying to create a world apparently safe and I can find nothing better to explain that than a little story by John O’Hara:

A man goes to the market to buy fruits, when he sees his own Death walking among the people.

Desperate, he runs back and asks his employer to exempt him that day, as he had seen his Death from close.

His boss lets him go to his village, but starts thinking that all that might have been a lie. He goes to the market and really sees his employee’s Death, sitting in a bank.

He complains: ‘But what are you doing here? My servant was surprised to see you and because of that I had to dismiss him from work!” ‘I was surprised to see him here as well,’ Death answers.

‘I have a date with him at five o’clock, at his village, and as it seems, he will escape me!’

The employer thinks of calling his worker back, but it is already late. Destiny will be fulfilled as it had been written, especially because the man was afraid of Death and decided to run away.

Reflection for today…The Manifesto of Encouragement -Danielle LaPorte

20 Oct

The Manifesto of Encouragement

“Right now:

There are Tibetan Buddhist monks in a temple in the Himalayas endlessly reciting mantras for the cessation of your suffering and for the flourishing of your happiness.

Someone you haven’t met yet is already dreaming of adoring you.

Someone is writing a book that you will read in the next two years that will change how you look at life.

Nuns in the Alps are in endless vigil, praying for the Holy Spirit to alight the hearts of all of God’s children.

A farmer is looking at his organic crops and whispering, “nourish them.”

Someone wants to kiss you, to hold you, to make tea for you.

Someone is willing to lend you money, wants to know what your favourite food is, and treat you to a movie.

Someone in your orbit has something immensely valuable to give you — for free.

Something is being invented this year that will change how your generation lives, communicates, heals and passes on.

The next great song is being rehearsed.

Thousands of people are in yoga classes right now intentionally sending light out from their heart chakras and wrapping it around the earth.

Millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.

Someone is in profound pain, and a few months from now, they’ll be thriving like never before. They just can’t see it from where they’re at.

Someone who is craving to be partnered, to be acknowledged, to ARRIVE, will get precisely what they want — and even more. And because that gift will be so fantastical in it’s reach and sweetness, it will quite magically alter their memory of angsty longing and render it all “So worth the wait.

Someone has recently cracked open their joyous, genuine nature because they did the hard work of hauling years of oppression off of their psyche — this luminous juju is floating in the ether, and is accessible to you.

Someone just this second wished for world peace, in earnest.

Someone is fighting the fight so that you don’t have to.

Some civil servant is making sure that you get your mail, and your garbage is picked up, that the trains are running on time, and that you are generally safe. Someone is dedicating their days to protecting your civil liberties and clean drinking water.

Someone is regaining their sanity. Someone is coming back from the dead. Someone is genuinely forgiving the seemingly unforgivable. Someone is curing the incurable.

You. Me. Some. One. Now.”

but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates,

"The heart is a symbol of love, of emotion, the center of our Selves. Wings represent freedom, divinity, and transcendence..."

Heart of Wisdom Symbolic Mandala by: Cristina McAllister at Gypsy Mystery Arts.
Please go to:
http://cristinamcallister.blogspot.ca/2011/01/art-spotlight-heart-of-wisdom.html for more information. She goes into an even deeper analysis and explanation on her blog. It is trully fascinating.

According to the artist Cristina McAllister:
“The heart is a symbol of love, of emotion, the center of our Selves. Wings represent freedom, divinity, and transcendence.
Together they suggest the form of an owl – an animal sacred to Athena, ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, civilization, strength and strategy. Owls have been revered throughout the world as messengers of sacred knowledge, insight and intuitive awareness, as well as scholarly pursuits.
At the top, a Native American shaman’s eye offers wisdom and protection. In many tribal cultures, shamans serve as intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. They interpret omens and offer insight through mystical, as well as practical means, in effort to protect and guide their people.
Below twines a pair of snakes. These creatures signified wisdom to the ancient Egyptians, Jews, Gnostics, Eastern Indians and Chinese. The notion of snakes being wise was based on observations of their behavior. When hunting, snakes appear to think deeply and consider every move before acting.
Also present are two West African adrinka symbols. Sankofa, or “return and get it” (above the winged heart) represents the ability to learn from the past. Nyansapo, or “Knot of Wisdom” (at bottom center) indicates intelligence, wisdom and cleverness.”

Reflection for today…Without You This Existence Will Not Be The Same, There Will Be A Hole -OSHO

20 Sep

“You are a unique individual.

And whatever you are, that’s the way existence wants you to be.

Enjoy it.

Existence created you because it loves you, it loved you so much that it couldn’t resist the temptation to create you.

There has never been anyone else just exactly the same as you, and there never will be.

Without you this existence will not be the same, there will be a hole.

Without you this universe will lose some poetry, some beauty: a song will be missed, a note will be missed, there will be a gap.

Existence loves you, otherwise you would not be here.”

Reflection for today…Challenge Yourself -Charles Bukowski

20 Aug

“If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.

This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind.

It could mean not eating for three or four days.

It could mean freezing on a park bench.

It could mean jail.

It could mean derision.

It could mean mockery — isolation.

Isolation is the gift.

All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it.

And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds.

And it will be better than anything else you can imagine.

If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that.

You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire.

You will ride life straight to perfect laughter.

It’s the only good fight there is.

Charles Bukowski {Factotum}

I love this Bukowski quote.

It really begs the question of how far any of us are willing to go in order to live our potential.

It is all about sacrifice and isolation according to Bukowski.

in a world which is doing its best, night and day,

to make you everybody else —

means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight;

and never stop fighting.”

Reflection for today…The Capacity To Be Alone Is The Capacity To Love -Osho

17 Aug

“The capacity to be alone is the capacity to love.
It may look paradoxical to you, but it is not.

It is an existential truth:
only those people who are capable of being alone are capable of love,
of sharing, of going into the deepest core of the other person –
without possessing the other, without becoming dependent on the other,
without reducing the other to a thing, and without becoming addicted to the other.

They allow the other absolute freedom,
because they know that if the other leaves,
they will be as happy as they are now.
Their happiness cannot be taken by the other,
because it is not given by the other.”
 –Osho

Reflection for today…Surprises About Humanity- The Dalai Lama

12 Aug

“What surprises you so much about humanity?

Man.

Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;

he lives as if he is never going to die,

and then dies having never really lived.”

His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Reflection for today…Interrelationship -Thich Nhat Hanh

10 Aug

“You are me, and I am you.
Isn’t it obvious that we “inter-are”?
You cultivate the flower in yourself,
so that I will be beautiful.
I transform the garbage in myself,
so that you will not have to suffer.

I support you;
you support me.
I am in this world to offer you peace;
you are in this world to bring me joy.”

Reflection for today…What is The Key To Untie The Knot of Your Mind’s Suffering? -Hafiz

9 Aug
What is the key
To untie the knot of your mind’s suffering?

“What
Is the esoteric secret
To slay the crazed one whom each of us
Did wed

And who can ruin
Our heart’s and eye’s exquisite tender
Landscape?

Hafiz has found
Two emerald words that
Restored
Me

That I now cling to as I would sacred
Tresses of my Beloved’s
Hair:

Act great.
My dear, always act great.

What is the key
To untie the knot of the mind’s suffering?

Benevolent thought, sound
And movement.”

Reflection for today…Our Deepest Fear -Marianne Williamson

7 Aug

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear
is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness,
that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,

talented and fabulous?
Actually who are we not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking

so that other people
won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine as children do.
We were born to make manifest

the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And when we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.”

Reflection for today…Essential Life Questions -Johnny Depp

4 Aug

What is sacred?

Of what is the spirit made?

What is worth living for?

And what is worth dying for?

The answer to each is the same.

Only love.”

-Johnny Depp

Reflection for today…Some Never Awaken- Anais Nin

3 Aug

You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world,

and you believe you are living.

Then you read a book… or you take a trip…

and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating.

The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness.

The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all.

It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death.

Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it.

They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children.

And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death.

Some never awaken.”

― Anaïs Nin

American Beauty is a movie that will awaken you.

What a brilliant film!

Spectacular.

Reflection for today…Examine Your Path -Carlos Castaneda

31 Jul
“A path is only a path,
and there is no affront, to oneself or to others, in dropping it if that is what your heart tells you.
Look at every path closely and deliberately.
Try it as many times as you think necessary.
Then ask yourself alone, one question.
Does this path have a heart?
If it does, the path is good;
if it doesn’t, it is of no use.”

Reflection for today…Choose Another Path- Portia Nelson

26 Jul

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS
poem by Portia Nelson from her book

There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery

Chapter I

I walk down the street. There is a hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there. I still fall in. It’s a habit.

My eyes are open. I know where I am.

It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

Reflection for today…The Price of Love -Bob Marley

Reflection for today…True Freedom- Eckhart Tolle

24 Jul

True Freedom

“True freedom and the end of suffering is living in such a way as if you had completely chosen whatever you feel or experience at this moment.

This inner alignment with Now is the end of suffering.
Is suffering really necessary? Yes and no.
If you had not suffered as you have,
there would be no depth to you as a human being,
no humility, no compassion.
You would not be reading this now.
Suffering cracks open the shell of ego,
and then comes a point when it has served its purpose.
Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary.”
-Eckhart Tolle

Reflection for today…Failure Is A Greater Teacher Than Success- Dr.Clarissa Pinkola Estes

19 Jul

“Though fairy tales end after ten pages, our lives do not.

We are multi-volume sets.

In our lives, even though one episode amounts to a crash and burn, there is always another episode awaiting us and then another.

There are always more opportunities to get it right, to fashion our lives in the ways we deserve to have them.

Don’t waste your time hating a failure.

Failure is a greater teacher than success.”

Reflection for today…Love and Respect -Don Miguel Ruiz

18 Jul

If someone is not treating you with love and respect,

it is a gift if they walk away from you.

If that person doesn’t walk away, you will surely endure many years of suffering with him or her.

Walking away may hurt for a while, but your heart will eventually heal.

Then you can choose what you really want.

You will find that you don’t need to trust others as much as you need to trust yourself to make the right choices.
