Reflection for today…Unforgettable -Jim Morrison

15 May

“I see myself as a huge fiery comet, a shooting star.

Everyone stops, points up and gasps “Oh look at that!”

Then- whoosh, and I’m gone…

and they’ll never see anything like it ever again…

and they won’t be able to forget me- ever.

―Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison…Poet/Writer/Musician/Artist/Free Spirit/Beautiful Soul

verdillac:” It hurts to set you free, but you’ll never follow me, the end of laughter and soft lies, the end of nights we tried to die, THIS IS THE END! ”

Jim Morrison’s Grave in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
It is a pilgrimage for Jim Morrison admirers to visit his grave and pay their respects…

 *

James Douglas Morrison also known as Jim Morrison was a free spirit, poet, artist, writer and musician.

He is one of those artists whose art has a timeless impact on humanity.

Jim was a lover of literature, philosophy, music, poetry, art, drama, shamanism, independent and critical thinking, etcetera.

He had many intellectual, creative and artistic interests.

Later in his life he was developing a stronger affinity for the blues and poetry.

I would have loved to see how Jim would have evolved as an artist and human being.

For now his admirers can read and listen to his work- the creative gifts he left us.

Jim will never be forgotten…

He is unforgettable.

Reflection for today…Music & Creativity -David Lynch Interviews Moby

22 Apr

Moby and David Lynch are two artists that I deeply admire.

Their art has enhanced my life in many ways.

Moby and David Lynch Playing Music Together…

In my opinion, they are masters of creativity and creative expression- art at its finest.

{I am always fascinated by the creative process and creative expression}.

In this short clip, Moby and David Lynch discuss creativity and music.

Moby and David Discuss Creativity and Music…

Moby was struck with an epiphany when David Lynch said that creativity in and of itself is beautiful.

He realized that “our lives should be spent in service of making great art, not accommodating the market place.”

Moby wants to make “beautiful, emotional and melodic” music with artistic integrity.

I love how he humbly says that he doesn’t know if he has accomplished his creative goals.

David reassured him that his songs are “really thrilling.”

I love how they collaborate with each other artistically.

You really get the sense that they deeply admire each other…so beautiful.

Reflection for today…Questioning Identity -Tilda Swinton

21 Apr

“I’m basically interested in identity, and I still find fascinating the question,

how do we identify ourselves, and how do we settle into other people’s expectations for our identity?”

-Tilda Swinton

Tilda is a huge David Bowie Fan…

“The other day, I was going through the airport security and I was searched by a male security guard. I’m very often referred to as “Sir” in elevators and such. I think it has to do with being this tall and not wearing much lipstick. I think people just can’t imagine I’d be a woman if I look like this.”

“You’re always playing yourself.
It’s all autobiography, whatever you’re doing.
It’s using them as a kind of prism through which to throw something real about yourself, or something relaxed at least.
Because the last thing you want is to look like you’re acting.”

Tilda Swinton is a brilliant actress and performer {one of my favourites}.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2Zajvjm4LI

She has performed “the maybe” where she sleeps in a glass cage for performance art.

Tilda’s recent performance at MOMA {Museum of Modern Art}…

Tilda is a fascinating artist and human being.

“It’s a real comfort zone for me to feel alien.”

It should come to no surprise that she is a writer.

If you have ever hear her speak, you will be struck with her grace, intelligence and eloquence.

Her natural beauty radiates outwards.

*

Tilda tends to favor a more natural and androgynous look.

The pictures from Candy magazine depict her in drag make-up.

These pictures are in juxtaposition with her usual natural aesthetic.

Scottish actress Tilda Swinton relishes in androgyny, artistry and creativity…

*

Tilda is so intriguing to me not only as an actress/artist but as a thinker and human being.

She says that a recurring theme in her work is the question of identity and the question of transformation.

Tilda Swinton in W Magazine {August 2011}

In this clip, she discusses identity and transformation….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEIFzoBgNe8

“Society circumscribes us and we play into this feeling that we have to pick one identity and stick with it and any natural transformation within our spirit is to be resisted at all costs.

If there is some great shift in someone’s life one is to feel nothing, but shame and failure, that’s the thing I am constantly drawn back to.”

“There is something insane about a lack of doubt. Doubt, to me anyway, is what makes you human, and without doubt even the righteous lose their grip not only on reality but also on their humanity.”

What keeps her engaged in performing and acting is the moment of shift and doubt in one’s identity.

“There’s such an effort to try and explain people.”

Gender, identity and beauty are such an intriguing topics which I hope to explore in future posts.

“Tilda does not always play women; she has played Mozart on stage, an Elizabethan nobleman in Orlando (1992) and an androgynous angel, Gabriel, in Constantine (2005).”

I am most grateful for a class I took called “sociology of gender relations” because it enlightened me about gender.

This class also brought to my awareness the struggles of women, gay people, transgendered people and other types of minorities.

More than anything this class convinced me that everyone deserves equality, there needs to be more tolerance in the world and that we should collectively fight discrimination.

Reflection is Fuel for The Creative Process -Gotye

20 Apr

“These songs come out of so many random and contradictory thoughts bouncing around my head- like sound waves between sheets of glass and when I’m lucky they also allow me to reflect on the world around me.”

-Gotye

These short documentaries give a glimpse into Gotye‘s creative process.

I am fascinated by the creative process and creativity overall.

{I hope to explore it more in future posts}.

Reflection is Fuel for the Creative Process…

Gotye’s creative genius shines through.

I love how Gotye uses older and sometimes forgotten/obscure music and recycles it.

{I also love how he used his dad’s art for his album cover}.

Wally de Backer/Gotye reflects on life as a part of his creative process

He is an alchemist {and his studio is his alchemical laboratory}.

Awaken Your Creative Potential…

I love how dedicated Gotye is to his art.

He is so infinitely talented.

Wally de Backer/Gotye is an example of someone who develops his creative potential.

{We all have creative potential and Buddha nature but we don’t all choose to awaken it}.

The most beautiful thing is the happiness and beauty he must feel while creating such beauty.

I have always felt that musicians and artists have the potential to contribute to the healing of the world.

{This is why I have a music therapy category.

It is because music and art have therapeutic powers}.

Reflection for today…Creativity & Intelligence -Albert Einstein

12 Apr

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

-Albert Einstein

The beautiful marriage of creativity and intelligence…

Do you think that creativity and intelligence are interrelated or do you think that they are separate entities?

Does ”creative intelligence” exist?

Do you think that creative expression can heal?

Can creative expression be a spiritual practice?

How do you like to express your creativity and intelligence?

Are there other creative outlets that you would like to try?

Would you rather stay with your favourite forms of creative expression?

{I would like to try many creative outlets…music {being a DJ and learning to play an instrument}, photography, jewellery design, graphic design, interior design, fashion design, teaching {the alchemy of education}, cooking, gardening, cinematography, graffiti artist, painting, sculpting, origami, making art on Etsy and Deviantart, learning photoshop, make-up artistry, typography, calligraphy {the art of beautiful writing}, dancing, yoga, meditation, etc }.

There is so much to choose from in a possible creativity palette.

{Some of these creative possibilities can even be a spiritual practice e.g. Buddhist monks creating mandalas for meditative purposes}.

Tibetan Buddhist monks creating a mandala...

I would also like to do some writing and research to develop a thesis into a possible book.

Of course, working on and hopefully improving this humble blog is a favourite creative outlet.

*It must be noted that creative consumption is also part of the creativity & intelligence equation.

Your creative diet is vital for your creative expression.

I love to read other blogs in order to inspire, educate and enlighten me.

Thank you for all of your hard work fellow blog lovers!!!

Reflection for today…A Desire To Be Understood -Doris Lessing

10 Apr

“Do you know what people really want?

Everyone, I mean. Everybody in the world is thinking: I wish there was just one other person I could really talk to, who could really understand me, who’d be kind to me. That’s what people really want, if they’re telling the truth.”
— Doris Lessing (The Golden Notebook)

Salvador Dali was beyond eccentric to the point of being misunderstood by others…

Salvador Dali was a brilliant artist but sadly misunderstood as a person…

Have you been understood in your life or have you been dismissed and/or misunderstood?

I have rarely been understood in life.

I can say that the few times it has happened, it has been magical.

Reflection for today…Ideas Are Like Fish -David Lynch

7 Feb

“Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water.

But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper.

Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure.

They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.”

Reflection for today…Cinematic Experience -David Lynch

2 Feb

I have always admired David Lynch for his surrealist creative vision- like Salvador Dali on film.

His films always look beneath the surface for the hidden and darker aspects of life {as Carl Jung would say our “shadow” selves}.

He frequently explores the relationship between darkness and light.

David Lynch: A Brilliant Artist

He doesn’t limit his creative expression just to film as he is involved in music, photography and even coffee production.

David Lynch is so married to his creativity and he attributes this to his mediation practice {however I will leave that for future posts}.

David Lynch: Master of Creativity

David Lynch asserts that if you watch a film on your iphone, “You will never in a trillion years experience the film…you’ll be cheated…”

Reflection for today…The Warrior’s Reminder -Erykah Badu

3 Jul

The Warrior’s Reminder

I am awake

My mind is free

I am creative

I love myself

My willpower is strong

 I am brave

 I practice patience

I don’t judge folks

 I give, not to receive

 I don’t expect, I accept
I listen more than I talk
I know I’ll change

I’ll hold on one more day

 I start over when necessary

I create my own situations

I am cosmic

I do not have the answers

I desire to learn

I am the plan

I am strong

I am weak

I want to grow

I know I will

 I take on responsibility

I hide myself from no one

I’m on my path

Warriors walk alone

I won’t let my focus change

Taking out the demons in my range…

-Erykah Badu

*Love You Erykah!!!

Tricky Spoken Word Piece & Interview – AllSaints Basement Sessions Special Presentation

27 Mar

This Shakespearean style soliloquy/ spoken word piece is why I love Tricky.
He is so unique.
There is no one like him.
His delivery is raw and exploding with confidence and wisdom.

He is a poet and an artist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4Fks524_34

Copied & Pasted from AllSaintsShop youtube channel…

“From his early collaborations with ‘Blue Lines’ era Massive Attack through his own highly influential recordings such as Maxinquaye, Tricky is a man who has done more to expand the definition and artistic aspirations of Hip Hop than almost any of his peers.

The otherworldly sprechgesang delivery stands in stark contrast to the braggadocio style of most other rap artists.

AllSaints Basement Sessions and GQ talk to the Bristolian icon about coming up with The Wild Bunch, becoming so famous so quickly, the artistic process and his exciting upcoming collaboration with Massive Attack.

Reflection for today…Creative Expression- Martha Graham

17 Feb

“You do not have to believe in yourself or your work.
It is not your business to determine how good it is, how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions.
But it is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly to the urges that motivate you.

Keep the channel open… No artist is pleased… There is no satisfaction whatever at any time.
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, the expression is unique.
If you block it, it will never exist through another medium and will be lost. The world will never have it.

—Martha Graham
